went to start it and it just turned over wouldn't fire. I did notice a clicking sound coming from the front of the bulkhead - I thought this was the fuel pump, but it was banging away as well. Any thoughts?

I hear what you say about oil gauge Martin and will get one fitted. Are the oil pumps reliable on these cars?

I really appreciate all the help I'm getting here - thanks guys...
Hi, if you mean behind the dash, this should only click when switched onor off. The oil pumps are fine, some people like to upgrade to a SAAB pump but that can bring its own problems. Martin.

        Right I have:

        1. Taken a torque wrench to the head nuts and the ones on the side of the leak were loose (they tightened anyway).

If your head nuts or bolts really were loose you will have lost the seal in your head gasket, and this will surely need to be replaced. Probably thje cause of the opil leak.

Ok have started the car after tightening the head bolts and now I see the oil coming from the exhaust manifold front end - it quite obvious where its coming from.

I reckon the heads going to need to come off - any thoughts anyone? Also I note that Rimmer Bros sell two types of head gasket kit a standard one and one that is thicker, again any advise on which to buy?

          With thanks

Thick ones are for when the head has been heavily skimmed .Make sure they are Payen gaskets ,they're the only ones worth fitting.

            Cheers Steve
