    Starter Motor Removal

    Hi All,

I need to replace the solenoid on my starter motor, I know I should go for a new Hi Torque starter but funds prevent this at present, I checked in the ROM and it mentions removing the exhaust does this really need to come out or can it be removed with the exhaust in place ?

    Any guidance appreciated.

    Thanks

No need to remove exhaust. Take the grill off the front and article with 3 extension bars for the top bolt. Bottom bolt is more straight forward little bit of wiggling and it should come out. Refitting (as they say) is the reverse.

Hi Andy (Paul, as always, beat me to it, which is why he is Goldstar!)

No need to move the exhaust, the starter comes down (and back up) with only a minor amount of manoeuvring. This is, however, only from the point of view of a right-hand drive manual car. I believe there is issues if it is a left-hand drive and/or automatic but someone else can comment on that!

You need to get a bunch of long extensions to thread behind the exhaust manifold - check the Tech section to see a good explanation with pictures. I followed it and it was fine. Toughest part is getting the top bolt undone.

        Good luck!

        Jeff

          Thanks Jeff,

Mine is a RHD Auto so I might have a few issues, I'll let you know how it goes, should be able to give it a go this weekend.

Mine is a red RHD auto I found the original LUCAS starter would occasionally not bite...nothing...so i decided on a remove and refit as suggested the lower bolt comes out easy, the top one was more difficult as...although I had a receipt for a replacement nos starter fitted just prior to my purchase, it (the bolt) didn't exist, I replaced with a Denso product (superb) and correctly fitted the top bolt with three extensions a gob of grease to hold the bolt and I managed from just in front of the radiator. The new starter goes off like a gatling gun and has never missed (so far)

Mine is r/h auto,You can easily change the solenoid with the starter in place, just make sure you get the correct one, there are two types.
Only 3 connections and 2 screws / bolts to undo and unhook it, almost takes longer to jack the car up.

              Cheers

Thanks Steve I'll try and see if I can change the solenoid in situ first, sounds like that could save me a lot of time.

I'm hoping the unit I've ordered is the right one, from the pictures I looked I think it is I'll find out when it arrives !

Thanks again for all the quick responses really pleased the help being provided.

I can confirm that changing the solenoid on a RHD auto can be done without removing the starter.

                    Hi Andy

Let me amend my posting - I have done both my solenoid and replaced the whole starter. As SGN stated, there is no need to take the starter out to replace the solenoid, just unbolt the solenoid and free it from the internal hook, then reinstall new one. A bit fiddly getting the hook to reattach, but better than removing the whole starter. Picture of my old starter installed, with solenoid removed is attached here.

                    Sorry for the confusion!

Good luck, looking back at my earlier posts, I did mine in 2016, (can't believe it was that long ago) and I said it took about 45 mins, as Jeff said in his post the tricky bit is hooking the plunger on the end of the solenoid over the operating fork on the starter, you need to do this first, if I remember correctly you have to hold the spring back with your fingers to expose the slot on the plunger.

Just a note the starter shown in the ROM is the wrong starter, if you look a the bushes will see what I mean , the correct starter is a M100, will just double check that in a mo!, as I have a spare on the garage floor.

My 1977 Rom shows the right starter 2M100 the older ROM shows a different /incorrect starter.

Solenoid turned up today, bit tricky to fit especially hooking in but eventually got it done and it now starts again. !!!!

Next job window wipers as they don't seem to work at all.......
