    Rocker cover gasket

Has my rocker cover shrunk or do these gaskets always come too long?
I bought a pair last year and they was exactly the same, that's probably why one of them split
Just want to check before I seal this one on
    thanks

Unfortunately they all seem to be too long and it makes them a PITA to fit. I glue them in and use loads of cloths pegs to hold them in place while it sets.

ok great ,I thought it was just me lol

      Clothes pegs....that's a good idea
I think I will try that

Do you seatithe gasket to the cover with well seal or something, leave pegged up to dry
grease the bottom then fit to the head?

Wellseal isn't sticky enough, it doesn't set hard enough to keep the gasket in place. I think I used evo stick last time, though I use any sort of contact adhesive I can find around the house.

I generally use silicone sealer on the side against the head, though I put a smear of oil on the mating surface of the head and let the silicone go off for a while which makes a good seal but can normally be lifted off without dislodging the gasket from the cam cover so I don't have to go through this whole performance again!

evostick gasket to cover then grease between head and gasket to fit.

I have resorted to cutting a few mm out each side to make the length right and supergluing the ends carefully. Better fit and no leaks so far...

Odd - I just bought some from Peter @LD and they fit perfectly. Where did you get yours? I just used a couple of drops of silicone to hold it onto the cover and lightly oiled underside. No leaks so far.

And, having just changed my timing chains, the rocker cover gaskets I received from LD were too long, as they were the last time I got some. No biggy, I just "cut and shut".

And to echo Phil S' comment - best to stick to the cam covers, then grease between them and the head. Two reasons - 1: at future replacement, I would rather not have bits of scraped-off gasket in the oily cam/valve area, and 2: the cam covers are not a perfect "fit" to the head sealing surfaces, so if you stuck the gaskets to the head, who knows if they would align and "seal".
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

                  Afternoon all,

SILICONE gaskets.....has anyone tried using these, rather than the normal cork gaskets ?? Have read a couple of reviews on these, (NOT on a Stag) and results seem favourable, i.e. if a cam cover is slightly distorted the silicone is flexible enough to stay in full contact with the head face. Any thought/experiences are welcome !
                  Thanks,

                  Neil.

I use a thin coat of Hylomar on the rocker side. It holds long enough to allow the rocker box to be correctly placed.

Yes. There was a 'bulk buy' from the USA organised by a forum member a few years ago. I fitted mine when I replaced the head gaskets in October 2014, 20,000 miles ago. I stuck them to the covers using Dirko, then a thin smear of Stag Wellseal between the gasket and the head. No sign of them moving or any leaks, so I am happy with them. Not had a need to remove the cam covers since.

I had some made custom from BUNA years ago here in the USA and still good on Stag no. 1. They were not very expensive to make. Unfortunately, the shop who made them moved so for Stag no. 2 I bought a silicon set made by Gasket Innovations. (They are not cheap) I have yet to fit them, but they look good and are soft and will take up the distortion on the head face. If it wasn't for the slight distortion, I would have used the standard cork gaskets.

In my case, the covers rarely come off. If your faces are good, stick with the cork gaskets and save some cash.

                          Dave/Sujit,

                          Thanks for the info.
Might just give it a go!

Does Aluminium not fizz away if on contact with copper, and there is a common electrolyte ? I would hesitate to use it around an alloy head. No doubt the more expert scientific minds will correct me.
