First MOT due at then of this month

Gent's I am due my first MOT with this car as it came c/w with MOT cert. I have over the course of the past year spend considerable time and money refurbing various parts of this car. To be honest I have no idea how the previous owner got it through an MOT as the bushes were all shot the back drum breaks were to say the least knackered, etc etc.

I do have a small scratch on the passenger side window and it appears that the previous owner used the wipers until the rubber blade haddisintegrated. I am going to try and polish this out. Any suggestions on this point??.

I have a small seap from one of the pipes on the power steering unit as well

Any key areas that I need to check before putting it in for the MOT that they might nail me on? any advise would be much appreciated

Hi Moraystag, you can try jewellers cutting paste on the glass,it does take a long time though,I got some from local windscreen repair supply place.

your power steering leak,I stopped a leak on mine that showed at the rack gaitor with Winns stop leak and this worked v.well

,My tester is always keen on brakes and suspension issues,he has picked me up on fusty looking brake pipes, track rod ends, front wheel bearing play, drag strut bushes.

Obviously all tests are different as are our cars,my policy has always been take care of the important stuff, then most other stuff is not too difficult/expensive to fix.

Are you near any local club memebers to give your caar a once over?

Hope this is some help regards,

    Mark

Many MOT failures are down to the simple stuff.... lighting, wipers, washers. Then the usual suspension wear and braking.

Items that often get a mention are front ball-joints and rear handbrake efficiency and steering column play

        Hi Mate
if you go onto the MOT website you can view the advisories for the last MOT --this would be a good area to start looking at , to see if things have got worse

Thanks Mark / Gents for reply, unfortunately I am nowhere near any SOC members that I am aware of, nearest being inverness which is some 55 miles away. However I do appreciate your advise and will double check these things out.

Mark can you get wins stop leak specifically for steering systems or is it a standard mineral oil leak stoppage type fluid. Sorry but I am still on a steep learning curve mechanically

It should not fail the MOT for a scratch on the passenger side window, only the driver's side. Good luck, Terry

Mike,Im sure its Winns ,but STP and a few other make the stuff,an yes it is specifically for PAS systems,it basically swells the rubber seals in the rack and ancillaries.

Not a big fan of Halfords but they do usually have a fairly goodrange.

Best of luck with your test.

              Regards Mark

                  Hi Mike,

It's only because of Darren's suggestion, I foundthe MOT website and as I don't expect he's up yet I thought I'd answer your question. Go to http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/

I think you'll find it all self explanatory, although mine only listed the last two MOTs.

Cheers (and my thanks to Darren)

                  Julian

One thing I can think of not mentioned - seat belt tensioners. If you have the self tensioning type, they need to reel in fairly easily. They lose their spring after a while and I've been pulled up on this one before. If you have them fitted in the rear as well, those will also be covered in the MOT even if they're retro fitted - i.e. if you have them, they have to pass.

                    At least that's my understanding.

                      Same with rear fog lights.......
