    Alternators

    Hi guys,

Are there signs that an alternator is on its way out? The ignition light stays on until the revs are higher, higher than I remember they used to be. Assuming that the belt is tight enough, is there anything else that could explain it? As fas as I can ascertain it is the original.

My idea was, whatever the answer to the above is, to carry a spare anyway, so any recommendations as to which one to buy? It's a late production '77 MK 2

    Thanks in advance.

    This fixed it for me...

I needed to replace my 4TR regulator. I bought the replacement from Rimmers. They supply what they say is a compatible replacement, however its a 4 pin one when the original is a 3 pin one. The diagram they supplied on their website did not match the device they supplied. I rang them to ask what was their reccomednadtion for

fitting a later style unit you have a range of outputs around the 90amp most good car accessorie shops or reconditioned places will have them available my 80a unit was 60 quid new so have a shop round. to test your current one use a voltmeter across the battery to check the output should be keeping the battery at a max of 13.7v so may charge up to around 14.4v after starting the car, out put should be high initially then drop off fairly quickly
