    carbs

I am in the unfortunate position of being employed in an engineering factory, which means anything needing renewed gets made out of super exotic materials and as we have blasting and powder coating, simply rub downs and painting, become re-finished to such a high standard that the adjacent parts also need done , so its never ending whilst I work through the jobs needing done.,which leads me onto question 1 of a million, or so ,to follow.

Whilst removing the air filter box ( now powder coated) and subsequently the carb elbows etc,the hoses/pipes described as fuel overflow tubes , are brittle and broke easily.

These tubes were open to the enviroment being routed between the right hand cylinder head and the exhaust down pipes.

Why are they not vented into a catch tank?

why are they not routed back to the fuel tank ?

and what would cause the carbs to overflow in the first place?

Hiya, the carb overflow pipes join at a T in front of the carbs, then go forward and vent down the front of the engine. If a needle valve sticks open, or a float gets punctured then the carbs will flood, and that's where the petrol goes. A complete set of new ones is quite cheap and you're best not to run without them, or excess petrol goes into the V, that's a serious fire risk. Cheers, Martin.

Thanks,Martin, I think the design is quite ingenious as I, take it, the excess fuel running to freedom will wash away the oil leaks left on the garage floor.
