    Oil pump

    Hi
I have a oil leak from the oil pump so thinking about changing it, is it wise to renew the pump and drive shaft and seal and is it easy as it appears to be if I drop the exhaust down to get at it easily?. Where is the best place to get a pump as soc spares seem reasonable? Thank you,
    Martin

Yes it is as easy as you say, once you drop the exhaust which is usually the hardest bit.

Where is yours leaking from?? To be honest unless the pump is worn I would stick with it. As far as I know the only new replacements are "County" ones of varying quality and with some known issues with the relief valve spring. The drive shaft is a simple hex bar and in my experience shows little signs of wear.

A leaking oil pump is usually down to failed O rings, either between the pump body and the engine block or the smaller one on the "bung" that retains the pressure relief valve spring and piston/plunger. The O rings harden with age. The one on the relief valve is quick and easy to change and can be done without removing the pump. It is not unknown for the transfer housing above the oil pump to leak (O rings again) and the oil run down over the oil pump, making it look like the pump is the source of the leak. Worth a look before pulling the pump off.

If your oil pressure is good, stick with the one you have, have a look inside and check the clearances as specified in the manual but leave well alone if ok, just replace o rings.

Thank you for your replies, the oil pressure is about 50 on the guarge, it looks as it is the oil pump, but how do you get to the transfer housing without taking the pump off

I think the main problem as said is the seals go hard and start to leak, modify your pressure relief spring cap by adding half a washer so you can remove it easily, see photo below, this also makes it easy to adjust the oil pressure if required. one of the other problems with leaking oil pumps come from the stag spare suppliers using metric equivalent 'O' Rings which can be slightly smaller than imperial 'O'Rings. I have had the same problem with a recon steering rack piston seals and water pump cage seals. if you are going to fit a county pump use the old pressure relief valve spring, but a new pump may not stop the leaks?
