On a Mk1 inlet manifold could I permanently block off the bypass?

I have a MK1 inlet manifold and live in California and only drive my Stag warm days. Can I block off the bypass without any ill effects? Is seems with the Mk2 manifold the by-pass is block by the thermostat once engine in warm. Just thinking out loud.

You can, but be prepared for all sorts of problems with overheating. Guess how I found this out!

The first Stag engine I fitted to my TR was a mk1 and I plumbed it like the cooling circuit diagram seen in my Haynes manual.

IIRC this was with the heater circuit return going into the water pump. The problem was that air was trapped in the pump and had no way of rising out of the pump casing due to the outlet of the pump being below the impeller and resulted in the temperature needle fluctuating quite randomly.

I ended up using a MK2 U shaped hose between the pump and the inlet manifold but blocked it off with a metal plug that had a small hole drilled in it (3/16 or similar).

This allowed air trapped in the pump to rise up into the inlet manifold while the engine was not running, but the hole was sufficiently small not to allow a significant amount of coolant to circulate once the thermostat had opened.

This cured my temperature fluctuation problems
