    Dissapointing Handle bowls

I have received the new chromed handle bowls from E J Wards.

    IMG_1931.jpg

Whilst they look nice, they are made of plastic and I wonder are they up to the job?

On the plus side, the chrome should be safer due to lack of the usual base metal oxidation. On the bad side, they will easily be scratched, and the constant heaving on the handle may mean a lack of life.

But I don't know as I have never had them before, maybe they are just fine. Has anybody used these plastic ones before and can comment

They also cost a lot of money for plastic.

So you haven’t fitted them and find the bowls disappointing because they are plastic? If you had searched here you would have found all the info you needed to make an informed choice.

They're made of plastic (ABS plastic to be precise) because it is both cost effective and durable.

you assume they will scratch easily - why is that?

Constant heaving on the handle? Fitted properly and if your door is adjusted properly there should be no “heaving” my doors open
    with hardly any pressure.

If you thought they cost cost a lot of money maybe you shouldn’t have bought them? I assume you claimed your SOC member’s discount? If they are unused you could speak to Wards about returning them.

Maybe use the search function here and get some other views of people who have fitted them rather than being so critical just on perception?

Airbus A350 is made of plastic too.

After seeing the SOCTFL ones I was heartbroken that my handles don't need replacing, but I'm waiting for the day!

From the E.J. Ward website shop:

"Produced in conjunction with SOCTFL these Door Handle Bowls have been remanufactured in strong modern plastic and chrome plated to look original "

Glad the Airbus isn’t made of Mazak.

Delighted with the new handles, they fit well and look great compared to the original Mazak and its legendary deterioration. The price for a pair is very reasonable compared to modern chrome plastics used all over our new cars. Perhaps the next project for shiny stuff could be the scuttle grille ? I’m all for the huge efforts people put in to keeping our joys on the road and looking good.

Fitted mine last week, a bit fiddly fitting the internals, especially getting the spring in the correct position, there is a little groove that one end of the spring should locate in, but patience pays off. They look great and felt very substantial whilst I was assembling them.
                Cheers Mac

Do they cost as much as a pair of NOS originals I wonder?

Have seen these in the flesh and they are the business.

Certainly a world better than the pitted mazak jobbies that I have on my car

Hmmm,, did you actually read my post? really?

Sometimes I find people on this forum are so cynical, with the constant 'if you searched' and not noting that I was NOT saying they were bad and I actually said the maybe they are good, but all you get is cynisism... Its a real turn off for new members...

                    Now adressing your points:

The dissapointment was because (for the price) I expected metal, but if they are fine... great.. thats all I was asking.

Scratched - because keys are in the vascinity and I have motorcycles with similar ABS chrome that do scratch, BUT maybe these are better

Constant heaving - Well we are all not as experts in setting these up as others. I have seen many stags handles not as smooth as new cars... but again, I defer to your opinon.

I was just starting a conversation, not trying to start a war...

I have to say that while i’m al in favour of replacing parts that are rusty broken etc, the door handle bowels when old and slightly pitted I think just lend to the general patina of the car, like the bumpers etc.,
Im sure the plastic ones are good but imho (which is probably worthless to most) leaving some aspects of the car untouched is a must.

                        Right...

                        I’ll stand back now.....

They could have been made again in Mazac, but would have cost much more. The tools for making them would have to have been expensively remade as the originals no longer exist, and just preparing and chroming the bare castings was going to cost around £60 each, meaning that the finished product was just not cost effective when compared with the plastic ones...
The material the new ones are made from is used in current car production, so is known to be up to the job, and the finished product amazing value to Club members..
                          Mike.

Goldstar Paul - do you know when the next batch will be ready? I have my name on the waiting list at Wards and I am hopeful they will be ready soon as the car is in for paint and I don’t want to put the old pitted ones back on.

Thanks for the info in advance and my sincere thanks for all the work the SOCTFL does for our cars!
