    Overdrive not disengaging

    Hello Overdrive smarties.

My overdrive happily engages every time - but is distinctly reluctant to disengage.
Any thoughts to throw at me as to what the cause might be?
Gearbox oil level is spot on before anybody asks!
As it's one of the 4x4's, removal of the overdrive for any kind of repair is an option so hideous I would prefer to avoid that if at all possible!

    Thanks in anticipation...............

Is the solenoid OK? Or are the seal on the solenoid OK. Could it be getting stuck in the on position

          Ouch, yes I see..

As Sujit said first step would usually be to remove the solenoid and check the seals, maybe some gunge in there?

Hi, Its a J Type. Take the finned rectangular sump off and clean and check both the suction and pressure filters. The pressure filter is behind the biggest plug in the main body and needs a pin wrench to undo it. May not be the problem but you will now now they are clean. IMPORTANT. If OD doesn't disengage don't use reverse as it will instantly destroy the OD. There is a unidirectional bearing inside that must not be forced to rotate backwards.
            Good luck

There was a poster some time ago who was a bit of an expert on OD

this is an interesting post re reversing with J-Type OD engaged.

edited to add, my solenoid would stick and leave the OD engaged. If I flicked the switch to off sometimes it would make weird noises and bang when it disengaged. Never tried reversing with it though.

New solenoid fixed the issue, however now it will not engage until the gearbox oil has warmed up. Need to get underneath and check electrics
