Switching over to an LED brake light will probably be the best option. However is there anything I can do to this plastic reflector piece besides binning it?

Some LED lights project light directly "out" (i.e. like a headlamp) as well as axially and so reduce the effects of less than perfect reflectors. The ones I got from Classic car LEDs do just that.
I found some on Ebay which project straight out. Also I ordered some for the reversing lights only to notice the reversing lights surround are metal and not plastic. I really didn't need them. I have so many regular 21 W bulbs collected over the last 35 odd years.
Well in CA we have this state wide stay at home order so I had time to do a repair on these. A bit of epoxy glue and some silver duct tape.

The type that only project straight out give a small circle of light, which is mainly visible from directly behind and not from a slight angle. The ones sold by classiccarleds or bettercarlighting project radially as well as straight out, so they fill the lens better using the reflector and are visible from bigger angles away from directly behind. A large lorry, for instance, might not be able to see your tail lights from an elevated position.

Thanks for the pointer. I didn't think of that, but fortunately, the ones I ordered do project radially.
