    baffling loss of spark

    Hi guys.

CanI tap in to the Stag fountain of knowledge out there?

My Stag, a 76 Auto has an intermittent loss of spark that is baffling me.

On purchase last year I replaced the coil, Ht lead, Distributer cap, rotar arm, plugs plugleads etc It hasthe lumentation electronic ignition system.

The power will suddenly die for no apparent reason. There seems to be good regular HT spark but the spark at the plugs is strong and powerful one minute and non existent the next.

When running the engine sounds fine with no missing then ZILCH!

    Any ideas lads?

    Hi Stanbow,

Had the same problem, and it was an intermittent fault with the electronic box, try and check this out (if you do not know how), a sure way is to reinstall the the original points set up

Usual checks for loose connections etc. needed first of all.

During the 'black-out' do you have a spark from the coil lead when disconnected from the dist-cap end and placed close to the block and engine turning over ?

If you have a complete lack of any spark with this testi'd suggest that your Lumenition power module is dieing , the lower-cost item is the coil, but i'd place my bet on the lumenition module

          Hi bud,
I had a faulty luminition optical eye in the dizzy. The problem started as a slight flutter in the rev counter needle. It progressed to cutting out briefly, and kicking straight back in. It then used to cut out on runs with the SOC and start after a couple of minutes.
I was finally kick started into solving it when it cut out in the middle lane of the M1, which tends to bring your reactions into sharp focus.
I replaced the lumenition box with a new one, and it still did it. Spoke to Tony Hart and he said you MUST do the optical eye as well. I did and it cured it immediately.
My money is also on this being the problem.
Paddocks sell the chopper blade (£12), but don't know if they sell the optical eye module.
          cheers,
          Peter

I had the same problem with the lumenition box but needed to drive for over an hour before it started playing up. In the end I borrowed the box from another of my cars and wired it side by side with the original.

When it finally cut out (in the middle of a roadworks one way system) I only had to swap the three pin plug to restore it to life and prove at last where the problem lay

              hi ,
Before you spend a load of money get youself 6ft of electric cable and a couple of crock clips. Next time the car fails run the wire from +ive terminal on the battery to +ive on the coil. The try start.
If it does you may have a low tension issue in the loom.

Search the forum for my thread "rupert is messing me about". This covers my shenanegans over the last couple of months.

              Good luck, Richard

                  Almost certainly the lumenition unit.

I had exactly the same symptoms 2 yrs ago, now completely cured by replacing the lumenition box and optical unit. The replacement box would not give any spark at all with the old optical pickup, so I changed that aswell and all is now well. I still don't know which one was at fault.

I rigged a ballast resistor on the bulkhead so I could connect it to the coil +ve when it was playing up, it's definitely worth checking out the coil supply first as Richard said.

                    Hi Lad's

So the concensus is the lumentation system. Spoke to Paddocks who say they have a fault finding chart they are sending me.

Vmad. I like the sound of the petronix ignitor but Paddock say it simply replaces the points and you do not get the ''boost' effect at the spark, so does that mean another or different coil?

In addition I can't seem to find a UK supplier for the Petronix, there myst be one surely? The net just seems to throw up US suppliers.

I have an Pertronix Ignitor on my Sunbeam Tiger, and it runs fine. Easy to convert back to points if you need to.

In the UKthe Pertonix Ignitoris usually marketed as the Aldon Ignitor, and has a price hike, even with the current weak UK pound i suspect you will be better off buying from the US-based firm Retro Rockets:

Can reading these posts transmit problems from stag to stag. Everything was OK until I started reading this thread. Now I've had problems on 3 different trips. The engine just stopped. All happened within a short time of the engine getting up to normal temperature. Really scary in an automatic in traffic with no clutch to push in to allow you to coast to a stop. On each occasion the car started up almost straight away. I've got the lumenition electronic ignition as well. Where do you start with something as intermittent as this. Terry
