I’m having a go at rebuilding a diff, all new timken bearings etc. I’ve finished setting up the back lash and I’ve checked the contact pattern, see photos. What do you think? The coast side looks pretty good I think, the drive side could be better.
Cheers

Hi Matt
Your quite brave, can you tell me where you purchased the planet gear shims from .well all your parts in fact?,and what the cost on parts is?
I ask this because I thought some shims in particular were unavailable, from memory think it was the planet or sun gear shims originally made of brass or bronze and now substituted with an inferior fibre washer that disintegrates.
Id like to do this but thought some specialist tools were needed to fit/remove the bearings

...... if only this Forum had a technical section where you could find info about a diff overhaul and those replacement shims ......
a diff rebuild is not for the faint hearted, getting the bits is only part of the problem, you then need to set the pinion preloaded, backlash and cap spread as well as ensuring you have the correct engagement to give the correct contact area.
yes I have done it many times,, but dont fancy pulling my diff out, I would rather put up with the clonk for the time being, unless I can pick up a spareðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜
Not sure why 2 yrs old is a problem, but then you know what's best for the forum and I know how I can order the brass shims using the information in a 2 yr old document, so I guess that means we're both happy.

Don't think trying to make people look small via sarcasm is good for any platform or context, and NO I don't know whats best for the forum but do know its sadly in decline and sarcasm and insults were and are a key factor in many of the former and present contributors departure.
You didn't need to be sarcastic when you could have just signposted to the Tec section ,which by the way I had read.
Cant see the problem with asking someone where they sourced parts for a job they are tackling right now and may have alternative supply suggestions !
Chris Witor for all parts, bearings, shims and various other bits and pieces.
You will also need various pullers etc. I recently acquired a 15t press which I would have been lost without. I think I had the carrier bearings on and off about 6 times to get the backlash right.

Mark,
I'm afraid I do take my humour cues from Blackadder, Fawlty Towers, Vicar of Dibley etc., and mistakenly did not realise that such comments are insulting and belittling, so please excuse this. I'm guessing that they're not on your TV watch list.
One of the reasons for some of the experienced old hands leaving was that their advice was being ridiculed and doubted. Implying that you'd read my technical note that the better shims can be had from Witor but wanting someone else to confirm it, or reading the technical notes and saying it's a shame that they're 2 yrs old discourages more experienced members from taking the time to compile these technical documents.
Among those who left are several that can tell you alternative sources, and yes, there is a better source than Chris Witor for many diff parts.
Anyway, water under the bridge. I'll not bother you with answers in future.
