    Washer Pump Repair

This started ouit as a modification to put a non-return valve into the washer line to avoid having to pump for 1 minute before water comes out on to the screen.

In the process of refitting the tube to the washer bottle top I broke off the stub pipe inside the bottle. Not wanting to buy one of those new ones with the pump screwed on to the lid, I thought I'd have a look see if I could repair it. During this process I discovered how the pump works, and found a pretty much disintegrated gasket which was blocking the input and exit to the pump.

Dug out some 5mm O/D plastic tube from long since gone modelmaking days, drilled out the rest of the broken off stubb - leaving a small section undrilled so the pump flow cross section wouldn't be enlarged (as the replacement tube was thinner walled).

Glued the stub pipe in (it was actually quite a tight press fit too)

    Repair job done!

Cut out new gasket and punched the required holes, screwed together, and new rubber gasket for the lid cut out of an old inner tube.

Now fitted - and it works a treat! A lot more water being pumped than previously!

Nicely done. You are lucky in that the rubber impeller is still in good condition. I've had them where the blades have broken off through age. Not much good then. I've not looked into whether an impeller from another type of pump will fit.

My son had a battery powered Nerf water gun. It stop working so I pulled it apart. It had an impeller like the one used. Sujit

Hi Drew, this is really helpful, thanks for sharing. What type of glue did you use for the stub? I previously tried glueing a broken off piece but had no luck keeping it there when attaching the hose back on. Thanks, Tariq

Yes, I can see that being a problem. If you look carefully I drilled out the hole so that my replacement stub was pretty much a press-fit. The glue was an all purpose plastic / PVC glue - nothing special.

Of course, you did mention the press fit. I guess that makes the difference to the structural strength. Time to start some drilling! Thanks for your reply, much appreciated.

Cheers Drew..Top Tip !! I too don't want to move from the original design but pump also not working so going to attempt a repair. I'm all for work-arounds and solutions where possible. Thanks for sharing.

Fortunately my pump works fine after I cleaned the terminals, but I like the check valve idea/ What is being used?

Hi Drew, taking inspiration from your post, I now managed to repair my broken connectors. Picked up a couple of these black pipe connectors which I cut down to size and slotted perfectly into the drilled sections. Just waiting to fully dry, them reassemble and test. Your post was very useful and helpful. Thanks, Tariq

I made one from brass plate & tube when the stubs broke. & cut a new gasket from rubber.
then found that some military 24v Land Rover pumps are a source of trico pump spares.
however they are drying up & the motor gets waisted.
recently got new impellors made.( the vanes fall off after 50 years)
they are a little too hard, supposed to be 70 shore, but feel a tad harder.
needed soap & hot water to get spinning.
after that it worked with cold washer fluid.
                              5 are on test.
                              watch this space.
