Would like to ask a couple of questions-firstly could someone kindly measure the length of a Stag engine dipstick from the little `hat` which stops it going any further to the end.silly question I know but my engine when I purchased the car (1992) had been removed and sent of to be stripped down and an estimate given made for the repairs.,, was told big end trouble. Then owners decided was not worth it and left it at the Machine shop-in France when an estimate has been asked for it is billed and when or if the estimate is accepted it is included In the total if not paid for the parts are seized.I arrive saying I have purchased the car and would like to settle their bill and collect the disassembled engine,no problem but all the parts had been dumped in their loft along with hundred or so old engine parts and I was welcome to search-after a whole day sorting through the jumble managed to find all except the sump but I am not 100% certain that the dipstick I found was the original one.Second question,in the factory specs it states that when filling the gearbox and overdrive unit from dry it takes 2 litres of oil -now when you drain off the oil how much would you get out-the car has been driven so that all the internals would have a coating of oil which would stay as a coating.I have had the O/D unit rebuilt in the UK,but have noticed fresh clean oil under the car which seems to come from a joint face of the O/D,oil was first put in 1998 but it was only until last summer that the car had its first outing (not bad a 30 year restoration!!). The car has been laid up again until now so am looking into the possible leak,I drained off just over 1400millelitres litres of cold oil so was the missing half litre still inside coating all the parts or is there a leak? all info gratefully received-thanks Paul Richfield.

Many thanks to you both but I would be very grateful if Sujitroys post could be confirmed because if his length is correct the present dipstick is way out!! its longer so then shows an incorrectreading for the full mark. When I was trying to find all the engine parts I found near the block a dipstick with all marks in English so I thought bingo but? so once again thanks-another plea in an old post ref the jackshaft a photo was shown of the block with the new bronze bush added to the front if anyone has a similar photo could they please post it so that I can make a copy-I have low oil pressure problems-and I might have to have the block line bored and bushed over here,a photo would help in translating my desires to the French machine shop-again thanks to all Paul Richfield

 Hello Paul,

Just measured mine (see pictures), and pretty much concur with Sujit on 11 1/4" (283mm in Roman Catholic).

Look in the technical section, engine rebuilding tips. There is a picture of the bushed jackshaft bearing on one of my enginesOriginally posted by richfield View PostMany thanks to you both but I would be very grateful if Sujitroys post could be confirmed because if his length is correct the present dipstick is way out!! its longer so then shows an incorrectreading for the full mark.

Rear jackshaft bearing was ok. Most of the load is on the front bearing so that tends to wear fastest.

Failure in that case was caused by the water pump drive gear teeth stripping and overloading the jackshaft. It was one of the non hardened Unipart ones that lasted 15,000 miles over 15 years with previous owners then failed 3 months after I bought the car.

Thanks Neil-got the g/box out yesterday and hopefully engine out today then start to open up the front end to check that jackshaft.I like to get help when hauling engines out but with the strict lockdown rules over here and heavy fines cannot get anyone to give a hand! 20 odd years ago would not have had any hesitation to go alone but not so agile as I was then-keep fingers crossed please.Paul.

Engine out and onto its stand, timing case removed, timing chains etc off, jackshaft out and checked-O/D of front bearing no measurable wear and with shaft back in place can just about slide a 0.002 thou gauge in 0.003 thou locks it up so I think that my low oil pressure is elsewhere. My next step is to fit the engine onto a test rig and hopefully with a new dipstick and the correct leval of oil this time see if my problems are solved!! again thanks to all for your help-Paul.
