    Garage Lighting

Stuck at home you start to think about things that are totally unnecessary and this is one of those I think !

Have we any lighting engineers that are willing to help me decide what type of lights and the amount of lighting I need for my garage. At the moment i have Fluorescent strips so I’m thinking about going LED but I don’t know how many I need.

Before I post any more details - does anyone have that knowledge that would be prepared to assist and share ?

I had some older style fluorescent with the starters on the side and just replaced the tubes with led ones and they came with their own starter, just a simple swap, 5 x4ft ,in 20x10 garage, plenty of light

LED HUT is where i bought them

I did this ,they are a great improvement over normal fluorescent tubes ,but I've since gone to led strips and the difference is like moving from moonlight to sunny daylight ,I got them from a Chap who has a stall at Newark and A47 auto jumble

led 4ft strips for me, standard width garage so one over the car and one at the other end over the bench, could do with one in the middle if using it as a work area as its 44ft long

I did the same, but with LED tubes from Screwfix. As you say, the type with the small starter unit are straightforward. But if you have a fluorescent unit with an electronic ballast, this has to be by-passed. Fairly straightforward, but.........

My garage is 18’ x 15’ and I have 3 x 5’ LED tubes and 1 x 6’ fluorescent. Still got to change the 6’ one to LED.

I think the above proves my point in that there are various options in regard to colour, types and amount of fittings. Because I know I need more fittings and I can’t source ones that match the current I will need to change them all and i don’t want to get it wrong.

ive lived with the current set up for 16 years so I might as well get it right this time - all advice appreciated - keep the ideas coming - thanks

The attached basic drawing shows the layout of he garage and where the current lights are and also where there are areas that could do with more light. I would like to know 1 ) How much light a garage of this size/shape should have for the purpose of a garage or workshop 2) The type of light ie cool white etc and 3) any suggestions to the best fittings. Thanks

TLC Electrical Supplies do 6' LED tubes to fit the fluorescent fittings. As soon as 'lockdown' is finished I'll go to the local warehouse and pick one up: https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_In...bes/index.html

There's variability in LED outputs, so recommend you keep an eye on these. I fitted a 6ft Luceco ~3 years ago - 4000Lm, 40W - think it was 4000K too. For detailed work over the workbench I find this 4,800 Lm 600x600 panel extremely good https://smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/produc...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 . It's brill in more ways than 1 and helped counter my cataracts.

White 1976 build ("Mk2") only a few mods

Dazza, have you thought of mounting a couple of led "tubes" half way up the wall where you need more light? That might complement the improvement in roof mounted light when you change them to LED?
