Notice slight play in the steering the other day nothing bad but noticeable. On checking the steering there was slight play/end float on the tie rod onto the rack . I have had a set of Superflex ball seats for the ball housing from tie-rod for a while, so thought it would be a good time to strip them down and replace the 48 year old ball seats/shims.
The end float is tiny, 0·0005 to 0·003 in, is much like if the ball moves freely but remains where you left it, its good. The 80 to 90 lbf ft seemed a bit high, but achievable. So both sides done and all looking good but there no mention of how tight it has to be to go on to the steering rack.
What have most people done, just FT while holding the opposite side, then knocked the lock tab down.
Using all 3 Stag manuals as a reference as there all slightly different.
Refitting
7. Lubricate lie-rod ball end and fit ball housing to
tie-rod.
8. Assemble ball seat, shims, tab washer and adaptor
to ball housing.
9. Tighten adaptor and check ball end for end-float
and articulation. End-float should be within 0·0127
to 0·0762 mm (). There must be no
tight spots in articulation.
10. Ensure adaptor is tightened to 11·1 to 12·4 kgf ill
(80 to 90 lbf ft).
II. Re-check ball joint for end-float and articulation. If
satisfactory, bend over tabs on washer.
12. Fit tie-rod to rack 57.55.0
