    Auto gearbox and running rough

    Hi all I have a 77 auto stag that’s been off the road for over 15 years. I have got it running but when revved pops and bangs. I was thinking carbs maybe need a clean and service? I also can’t get it to move when put in drive and reverse. I feel it engage when they are selected but it won’t move.could it be the oil has drained from the torque converter ?

    Hello Andy,

    Welcome to the Forum; I'm sure that you'll find a wealth of knowledge on here.

    The torque converter should refill quickly after start up, so maybe a problem with its internal pumping. Is the fluid level right?

    Regarding pops & bangs, check the dizzy cap for moisture or cracks; check the vacuum advance works; check the dizzy plates move, and that the weights aren't stuck. Are you running points or electronic ignition? Have you filled with fresh fuel and changed the fuel filter?

        Fluid level good. Electronic ignition. As for the brakes that could be possible as not moved in a long time so I will check that out.

          Stale fuel
          Split diaphragm(s) in carbs

            And top-up the carb dashpots with oil (20W50 will do).
            White 1976 build ("Mk2") only a few mods

              Dash pots good,new fuel, I have jacked up the side I can get to and the front wheel is solid and the locking wheel nut is rounded off .happy days.now trying to hammer on a socket to remove it. Wish me luck.Andy

                If the engine revs drop the gears are probably engaging and the brakes are stuck on. Have you checked the plug leads are in the right order on the distributor cap?
