Luggage... because of the boot smell

I have struggled to keep my boot from either smelling of either petrol or exhaust fumes and am fed up that my coat or whatever ends up smelling. So I thought I would invest in some luggage to put them in to prevent smells contaminating them.

I need luggage that prevents the smells getting in and thus I was looking at more specialised luggage. At first I looked at Samsonite luggage that has seals, but that is surprisingly expensive (£200-300) then I looked at specialised telescope cases like below

    https://www.optics-pro.com/multi-pur...t-case/p,47005

    Oh and a video

I was thinking of getting two as two will fit with space either side.

Maybe this is over the top and your good selves who have touring experience could recommend normal cheaper stuff?

Either way I would love to hear what people use.

The petrol smell seems to come and go, whereas the exhaust smell.. well its constantly there in amounts enough to make clothes smell

Wouldn’t it be easier and much cheaper to resolve the problem? Fuel smells have been discussed recently. Exhaust could be a faulty boot seal or badly fitting lid. Do the ends of the seal butt together? Or faulty/missing grommets on floor or where fuel breathers exit..

I've done extensive touring in my Stag with normal suitcases in the boot and never experienced any residual smell on the clothing. Her indoors would certainly have mentioned any olefactory issues....

I'd also suggest that you check the boot lid seal and resolve the petrol smell issue. Neither should be too hard to fix.

I have worked on both issues. I tried various boot lid seals. I seem to need differing heights at different locations. Near the hinges a very thin seal, near the boot lock thicker etc... It was costing me as everytime I bought one I would try to cut it to suit, but it was so difficult to see inside, It would be wrong...so I gave up... Of course as Time goes by it will niggle me and I will have another go.

The petrol smell varies so much.Sometimes... nothing, other times its there. I worked on all areas and cannot see anything wrong at the moment in terms of where it could be coming from. Initially I found quite a few issues all relating to old brittle breather / overflow pipes, and they got sorted. As above no doubt it will bug me, but for now I was looking for something for the summer, thats if we are ever allowed to go for a spin.

My reasoning for the sealed case was because certain items are left in the boot 100% of the time, as oposed to touring which would be just 2 weeks and even then taken out and aired.

Probably I am going over the top though

As above, best to cure the problem, but would vacuum starage bags, available from places like Dunelm, be of any use.

In my opinion, there is a big difference between petrol fumes and exhaust smells.

The petrol fumes can only be coming from one place, the tank and the pipes off it. I still have a complete new set of pipes to fit as I rarely have petrol fumes in the boot, but still too many for my liking even if it is only occasionally but annoying.

As Koy says, its easier and makes sense to fix the problem. It could be just a small amount but enough to smell strong and after all, if it is petrol fumes, could be dangerous.

I would never get any luggage in my boot, it is full of tools and spares. I don't care if they smell.

Ahh a true Stag owner.. colour matched to 'suit' the car.... or is it that they were the cheapest colour.

Still thats what I was looking for... so that I could leave coats etc in all the time but quickly remove them if I needed to carry something.

                        Good price too

Probably as only the custard tart would buy them.

As my boot has a number of other things in there (other than tools ) so space is limited and that space is an odd shape. i always used bergan/canoe bags. 100% waterproof and are soft so they fill all the available space.
