Hi all, can anyone tell me if the gearbox has a dedicated breather or does it breath via the selector rods running in from the gearchange lever. Thanks Paul.

You are halfway there. There is a very small, but important breather above the selector rods, which is completely invisible with the gearbox in place. It is simply a small hole drilled through the front of the top cover,
above where the selector shafts are supported. If it gets blocked, you are likely to get oil leaking out from the selector shaft rear seals, which makes an awful smelly mess.

Thanks you both have now spotted it-I removed that large blanking plug on the top of the cover put my ear to it and blew compressed air into that small breather hole and could hear it blowing inside the box so all is clear.I have the engine and box out and have modified my engine stand to take the box as am trying to trace an annoying oil leak from the rebuilt O/D unit, Again thanks for the input Paul. You do not have permission to view this gallery.

Are you sure the oil leak is from the overdrive? When the selector shaft seals harden with age, they can release a surprising quantity of oil as it is thrown up there by the rotating gearwheels. That will then drip down onto the gearbox and overdrive. Replacing the "O" ring seals will keep you busy for some time if they need doing!
