    Distributors for different years

    Hi

Needing some help with distributors. It is for a 1977 Stag.

The distributor currently fitted is a Lucas type 35D8 with model number 41500 which was for Stags 1972-73. The 41500 has an vacuum spec of 4-10-7R, meaning retarded.

Looking up references, it lists that the model for my 1977 Stag, should be 41525 being for 1973 -End. It has a vacuum spec of 5-11-6 so advance, not retarded.

Interesting the 1970 Stag lists as 6-20-7 so not retarded.
    Whereas 1971 seems to have an each way bet with 6 20 7 and 1 12 8R

I would have thought there would be some performance issues fitting the wrong distributor, but maybe it was only done for emissions reasons or the different heads from Mk1 to Mk2.

    Does anyone know:
    1. Have I mucked up my understanding with the above figures
    1. Why the difference between distributors for 1971, 1972, 1973 and the 1973-End
    2. Can the different distributors be put on different Stag years, without there being much impact?

    Thanks

Yes I'm down under and it was when I started looking to get a new vacuum unit that started me looking at what was going on and the differences.

The different combinations were due to emissions in different regions. If you have a 41500, I seem to see somewhere a 41500A, and the springs and weights inside it have not been touched and you still need to get your car through emissions, then get the vacuum with the retard. They are now available from the usual UK suppliers.

On a side note. there was a guy out of Australia by the name of Nathan, there many be many Nathan's I suppose.. He used to be on a USA forum which shut down. He was very knowledgeable. He used to mod Stags. I think he made a stag with duel timing chains. Great resource he was.

Were you thinking of David Nathan in NZ. He built a very high performance Stag and it had twin cam chains, four side draught Webers on a cross manifold and an exhaust manifold looks like a can of Spaghetti has been poured down each side of engine. Absolutely brilliant
              Cheers Ian A
