    Kenlowe fan

    Hi.every one.

    old member,newto forum and computers.

Is there an advantage toremoving fan and viscous coupling and fitting Kenlowe.

if so what size fan to fit.

    Thanks George.

Bigger the better; mine 16" but I don't like to boast.

and leave the ordinary fan there as well.

Opens can of worms and retires to watch results.

Why boast? A perfectly good size! No need to retain mechanical fan!

        16 INCHES !!.....size does matter.

Since this threadis here might as well contribute,... can I just get the fan on its own? I think a 14" should suffice and who does the best deal.

        Thanks,Sukh.

i am running both fans so the kenlowe only cuts in when sitting in very heavy traffic on a hot day

Great to see you here George, welcome, hope you enjoy it.

Personally I think that its best to retain the viscous fan as it sucks air through the radiator when you are stationary, but slips at higher revs saving energy when the ram air provided by the car's motion means that less fan draught is required.

The viscous fan isa gooddesign featurethat should be utterly reliable, see the SOCFTL post on Viscous Couplings. That said a Kenlowe fan is a great insurance policy for those very hot days when stuck in traffic. I have one on my Stag and it cuts in perhaps two or three times a year (4,000 miles per annum). I would not like to rely on an electric fan, the engine compartment requires continuous air coolingat all times.

                Guys,

One can buy a Kenlowe fan by itself direct from Kenlowe, but they will only sell at RRP. If you go elsewhere, you might find a complete kit discounted below Kenlowe's fan-only price. You would then get all the minor O&S that you might need but what you'd do with the Kenlowe switch, I do not know.

I cannot support retaining the mechanical fan. If you connect up an over-ride switch you can run the electric fan at any time; it can even run when you've switched off the engine until things cool down.

Thanks for the info chaps looks like devided opinion on keeping or discarding

viscous fan. Maybe I will go along with both for awhile.

Thought I'd add my two pennies worth.

Most modern and even older cars have electric fans only.

The viscous fan draws a lot of energy from the engine in terms of drag and as other threads have said, if the coupling is not ok (wax drying up)the coupling can be more of a hindrance.

I removed mine and fitted a new Kenlowe (2 speed but only 1 speed used) The fan only cuts in when it's needed and mainly on tickover. When travelling, the air flow is enough to cool without the electric fan cutting in at all. Having said that, I have louvred the bonnet to aid air flow. Temp gauge constant 90 deg.

                    Hope that helps.

I have to add to all these comments,i have found that having a kenlowe fan without the standard fan in heavy traffic (like my daily commute) runs the battery down quite quickly as the charging system on stags is mediocre at best, personally i would leave the standard fan and have the kenlowe as a back up. On most other cars i would remove the standard fan and replace with kenlowe only. If however you are not spending your time in bad traffic give it a go but watch the voltmeter, espescially when lights, heater, etc are on also.
Take a look at your voltmeter with everything electric on and at idle and see what i mean.
Well iv'e stuck my head above the parapet now waiting to be shot to ribbons!
                      Good Luck! Happy cooling!

Hiya George, nice to hear from you, welcome. I have a 16" Pacet fan, cheaper than Kenlowe and as good. (Stafford Vehicle Components) I've known fan controllers topack upso keep both, there's no real advantage to removing the original. Being a little on the cautious side, I think belt AND braces are appropriate in a 35 year old car.One more point, an electric fan can do wonders in cooling a radiator, but by the time the air has passed through it's out of puff, and does nothing for theunder bonnet temp. Cheers, Martin.

                          Hi George,

I've run without a mechanical fan for six years without a problem. I usea TR6 spoiler and Senator aircon push fanthat only cuts in during tickover, slow moving traffic or going up slow steep hills. Never suffered from fuel vapourisation problems but dont have electronic ignition box to keep cool.

However - I don't like the fact that the engine temp risesbefore the fan cuts in, or that there is no air movement under the bonnet if I don't use the override.

So I've just sourced and fitted a mechanical fan plus OEM Landy viscous hoping for better control of engine temp at the expense of fuel consumption. As has already been said, belt and braces.

                          Mark.
