Guide prices for an average car are now about £12k and that might only buy you a runner that needs work. I’d be very careful about cars up to £8k unless you’re looking for a project. If you find a car for sale ask on here to see if someone could go check it out with you.
Five years ago I was buying and went to look at car at a dealer in the Midlands. It was a very expensive shed! The alternative was even worse but I was told that it was a good buy because it had extractor exhaust manifolds…

      Evenin' Stagboy,

      Welcome to the SOC.
Hopefully you may be able to fully access all sections of the website.
The section with the digital edition of the Club magazine has cars for sale, parts for sale etc. at the back. Same as the print edition.
The April 2020 edition has one Stag in your projected price range. £7,500.
A white manual/overdrive 1974 car, described as mechanically sound, bodywork fair.
Car is located in Worthing. (Must point out I have no connection whatsoever with the vendor..)
As Richard (previous post) has pointed out, unless you are looking for a car which requires a lot of work, you can expect to pay around £12k for an honest car which doesn't require a King's Ransom spent to get it into a reliable, useable condition.
Main thing is the bodywork. This is the expensive bit. You can spend "fousands, mate" sorting out a rusty one.Engines have (usually) been sorted out by now.
If you go back a few pages on the Forum, you will find posts from others looking for a car, and advice from many regarding what to look for etc. (There is also a "What to look for" guide somewhere on the website, can't remember exactly where, off the top of my head.
Still, best of luck with the search. And don't overlook adverts in local papers, you might just get lucky. As Richard suggests, if you find a car, drop a post onto the Forum, no doubt someone will be able to give advice - but aas we are still in the land of Lockdown, going to see a car might be problematic.
      Stay safe,

      Neil.
