On my 73, besides the temp sender being open, there is an additional resister stuck on the back of the temperature gauge. Wire wound. Is this because someone put the wrong sensor in there? I'll pull it out and test everything on the bench but strange. Might be putting in programmable Speedhut gauges sooner than I expected.

Sounds like some previous owner has been messing to try to sort - it may indicate the Voltage Regulator may also be faulty. Suggest you get a correct sensor and try with that after removing the external wirewound resistor.. This gauge, together with the fuel gauge is fed from the Voltage "Regulator" unit fastened onto the back of the casing of either the speedo or tacho. Note that the V Regulator is designed to provide an average of 10V - it achieves that by switching the battery voltage on and off with a mark-space ratio designed to average at 10V. This is quite adequate as both Temp & Fuel gauges operate by heating a bimetallic strip to which the pointer is linked, so is well damped. Quite a few folk have replaced this regulator with a solid state 10V regulator, readily and cheaply available.
White 1976 build ("Mk2") only a few mods

Stabilizer was at 11.3 so I already have a SS one on order and a new sender. But seeing all the rest of the mess in there, started thinking I might just buy a set of VDO gauges now. Looking into how to get a speed sensor on the T-35. I like Speedhut, but three times the price of VDO Vision. Nice backlit beat the heck out of Smiths.
I know the stabilizer well. I started building SS ones for my TVR friends back in about 1990. Don't have any more chips, so had to order one. New regulators are actually better as it has lower dropout voltage.
