I recently acquired a Stag and joined the SOC, so thought I should say hello, from France. I am getting to know her, like getting a jet of water shooting out the top of the door seals onto the passengers every time a door is closed! (I brought the car home on a trailer and it rained non-stop for the 7 hour drive. I guess it is not so water tight, but hopefully all the water will empty out of the seals soon).
It drives very well, and only thing I am a little concerned by at the moment is the gearbox whine. No noise at tickover (other than the engine), but then comes in when moving, in every gear, accelerating and decelerating. Pressing the clutch in or putting into neutral (manual box) and the noise disappears. I have seen a few posts talking about a similar noise from the diff, but I think my symptoms point to the gearbox? Also, I understand the diff was replaced a couple of years ago. It also had a recent clutch. Do you have any pointers on what in the gearbox it could be and how easy it is to fix? I haven’t checked the oil level yet (although the car was supposed to have been serviced just before collection), which I know is probably the first thing to do, but as it is going into a local classic car garage next week for a checkover and Contrôle technique, I will ask them to take a look as the plug does not seem so accessible without a ramp or stands.
Any pointers appreciated. Thank you!
