    Slick 50

Heard great things about Slick 50 back in the 80 but never tried it ,Saw some today and was wondering what your thoughts on it nowadays are.Is it outdated because of modern oils?.I had a friend with a TR4 with slick 50 in it ,his oil cooler burst and he made it home with no oil and no damage to the engine.

My dad used slick 50 in our first 2500 S he put it in when the engine was rebuilt at 70k the engine then covered a total of 250k using several thrust washers and main bearing shells!

We stripped the engine at 250k and found the pistons were still and excellent fit and still on the original ring size, also the camshaft was the original one!

Don't know if Slick 50 helped this engine achieve this or my dad always changing the oil every 3000 miles?

First point is that i doubt it will do any harm - if it did it would not be on our shop shelves any more. I used it back in the 80's, seemed worth trying at the time, but i didn't suddenly get the smoothest running car in the world !

I've settled for regular 3K oil changes -which i suspect contributed significantly to the 250Kengine lifetime.

      cheers..... Andy

Got it in mine after experience with many past cars - especially my Dolly Sprint when I copped a stone through the oil cooler on the A23 many years ago and run dry before I realised what had happened and things got noisy..............very noisy

Crept it the 1/2 mile to the nearest service area, swapped the cooler pipe housing for the standard transferplate filled up with oil and absolutely no damage apparent - engine ran fine for another 18 months until I sold the car - convinced it was the Slick50 that saved the bearings.

Also had a 133000 mile old Rover V8 that was getting a bit "busy" in the noise dept - stuck some Slick50 in and within 50 miles, things were very noticeably quieter, the engine seemed perkier and I went from 19 to 21 mpg.

I also have it in both my Hondas - I should buy shares in the company

Retreat it after every 6 or 7 oilchanges if you are on the 3000 mile interval - it has a good persistence but does eventually wash away.

There will always be detractors J - I can't claim that any of my experiences can be backed up by scientific evidence, I can only speak as I find and have found.

I wouldn't use any of these sort of products in an auto box for instance - auto boxes do tend to be affected by friction reducers - even the supposed purpose concoctions - however the straightforward slick50 engine additive has always for me done more good than harm (not that I've ever experienced any harm) - more mpg (marginal but real) quieter mechanically - definitely a tangible effect, and when things have gone seriously t*ts up having the additive in place definitely didn't have a negative outcome!!!

The Septics love to sue anything that moves, so I wasn't surprised by anything I read there - I can only go with what I believe, and from experience of some 30+ years of fixing cars, professionally and as a hobby - I think it works.

I used Slick 50 in my old BX GTi. No difference to economy or performance, but it did get quieten things down a bit.

                  Never used it since though.

Slick 50 was soldas the slipperiest thingknown to man ( well maybe the second slipperiest) I have always put an additive to by 20/50 mineral oil change as it is cheap insurance in comparison to repairs usually STP ( Stop Taking the P***) or Wynns, yes give it a go.

Hi .....Have always been a bit wary of some of these additives- a good friend of mine who has been in the trade for over 40yrs- observered a number of engines fitted in various Police vehicles etc over a period of time developed "hot spots" on piston crowns as a result of not blending properley! mainly with thicker viscosity oils!

for that reason think will give a wide berth!

                      :dude:cheers!
