I use the the plastic filters but mine are on the suction side of the lift pumps, that way you stop anything damaging. it.As long as there both fitted the right way around all should be good. I take it the 2nd filter is finer ie. it will filter out smaller particles and is a water trap.
Even Burlen now reccomends a pre-filter between pump and tank. A big can. 40 mucron will do. Then the smaller 20 micron up front. Unless you switch to a Weber in which case I would use a 5 or 10 micron up front.
