It definitely sounds on the induction side, I have used brake cleaner and the car revs more so its definitely leaking but the squealing doesn't change pitch.

The gasket is leaking from the inlet manifold so I am going to strip it down and replace the gaskets.

I am worried that I do this and its exactly the same, I will remove the water pump and then run it briefly to see if the noise disappears

One more thing, if you are going to pull the water pump cover make sure that the clearance is set correctly, I hope that the noise is not the water pump bolt kissing the inside of the cover.

If there is a leaking gasket then air will be sucked in through that leak, I am guessing unique'ish circumstances are that you have created a very loud whistle and new gaskets etc should cause it to go quiet again.

      Good luck

I have removed the inlet manifolds and the gaskets are shots so I hoping that is the source of the noise!

I would like to retain my waterpump but change the bearing, does anybody know where I may get the bearing replaced and not an exchange unit ?

You can buy a pump overhaul kit, which includes the bearing, seal, etc. That way you retain your (presumably) good shaft and gear.
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

Is it possible to repalce the bearing myself as Ive been told I need a press and a lathe?

How can I tell if its worn?

It is a little stiff to turn but is this normal?

Be careful what parts you use to rebuild the pump. Rhp bearing & revington tr seal. Yes you need a lathe to face the back of the impellor. Have pm’d you.

The inlet manifold had a large piece missing which was causing the noise.

All sorted now. Thank you for all of the help especially Julian!

                Any members on Hayling Island?

That's worrying; did you find the missing bit? You wouldn't welcome that being swallowed into the engine. Any photos?

Keep us informed with how she runs, sorry that the only pump part worth keeping was the impellor, after cleaning it up on the face! Shaft gear chipped, cage previously bored out

Many of the water pump face seals being supplied are not suitable, even if they fit.
