AFTER THOUGHT!! - Crankshaft pulley bolt - how do I shift it now??

    Hi all,
Dropped a bit of a clanger me thinks . Stripping car now for major re-work ..... was only going to sort the rear suspension!! Anyway gearbox out, and broken engine back plate along with ring gear etc removed. HOWEVER ..... I didn't think to loosen the crank pulley bolt first. Tried a strap wrench around the pulley but no use, any offers on how i can loosen the crank bolt now please? Thought maybe refit the ring gear and get someone to hold/lock it to stop the engine from turning?? Any ideas greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Gord

Get a large pair of stilsons (24") and grip the back "collar" of the pulley to stop it turning.

Impact wrench will shift it. I’ve borrowed a 24v one from my friendly garage in the past.

A soft rope down the first plug hole should do it.

2 crank bolts in the flywheel end or the crank, piece of bar between them with the outer end of the bar against a bolt through a suitable hole in the block, just make sure you line it all up in the correct roration

I use a short piece of scrap bar, about 3 to 4" long. A hole at both ends. A clutch plate bolt through the bar onto the flywheel and a second nut and bolt through a hole in the engine/gearbox mounting plate.

Can definitely recommend this method - worked perfectly for me!

Hi again folks. Put the impact wrench on it - bolt fairly flew out !! . Job done once again - thanks to the knowledge and willingness to share tips on this forum.
Again thanks for ALL the responses, my appreciation to everyone who took the time to respond.

Exactly the same for me! It's now a bare shell on a spit having welding done & costing lots!

First time I did mine an impact wrench wouldn't touch it. So borrowed a bigger one - 3/4" drive, supposed 800 ftlb torque, nice fat air hose, wound the pressure up, still nothing. Ended up with 24" stilsons resting on the front chassis leg and 3/4" drive socket and T bar with a literal 6 foot scaffold pole extension. I guestimate a steady 500ftlb was needed to crack it, based on how much pressure I had to put on the scaffold pole. I really thought something would break! The pulley had some nice deep marks where the stilsons bit in. Impact guns are good but in my experience they don't always work. The next time I undid the bolt a coule of years later my "normal" 1/2" drive impact gun did the job - I can only assume that some sort of gorilla did it up the first time and/or it was slightly seized in the thread.
