    Aaaaaaaarrrggggghhhhh!!!!

Finished putting the car back together this afternoon after having the gearbox off to sort out an oil leak and fired her up.....

....no problems there, but once warmed up noticed water leaking from the base of the rad filler. Is this fixable by welding? and can it be done in situ?

Al, this is a common problem. The filler bung often gets overtightened, and too much torque on the neck can crack the soldered joint.

This can be re-soldered using a very large soldering iron but you may have to partly drain the radto get a good watertight joint. If there is any water near the joint, the solder will not seal properly.

Dont try to weld it though, its brass!

I use a cooks blowtorch - good, hot but small and controllable flame - warm up the base of the neck where the crack is and flow some solder in - Bobs yer uncle and Fannys yer aunt

It's the most unlikely product - a cooks blowtorch but that flame has endless uses on a car. Martin.

Excellent.... we have one of those

Do you use normal solder as in plumbing?

I had this exact problem a couple of years back. I bought one of those butane pen torches off eBay, cost about 3 quid. Used normal plumbers solder and sealed up the leak in about 5 minutes. Not had a problem since.

Brush any paint and poo from around the crack with a small brass wire brush, if you have some give it a dab of plumbers non-acid flux, and in with the smallest pointy flame you can get right on the crack and poke in some plumbers solder immediately it starts to melt. Add enough solder so that the crack disappears and remove the heat immediately the crack has gone. Hopefully all the adjacent joints didn't get enough heat to affect them. Wash your joint off and visually check it looks ok before filling with coolant again just in case you need to give it a second go........
