    Oooops Ignition coil

Hi all , accidentally left my ignition on all night, coil was hot to touch when I noticed it next mort , car still starts although my battery was flattened, not test drove it yet , just wondering if something like this would do some damage to the coil long term ? Regards Graham

For the cost involved, I'd fit a new one for peace of mind, or a least carry a spare. It's bound to fail at the most inconvenient time.

What Dave said. Coils don't seem to like getting hot. A number of members have used the Bosch Red coil with good results.

Do you have electronic ignition? If it doesn't have protection a continuous current could also damage that.
My Bosch red has been fine.

Can you confirm the details of the Bosch red coil. What price is it approx and best place to buy?

Coils can dissipate as much as 35W. That is a lot of heat. If you doubt me, go grab a 40 W light bulb. I would be more concerned with the igniter than the coil.

If anyone has a Bosch Red and can measure the primary inductance and DC resistance, I would like to add that to my records and plot it against other coils to see which may be the best fit for a V8. I have plotted, and most folks experience follows, for our MGBs driven on the street the Bosch Blue is the optimal choice, followed by one of the Pertronix. The Lucas coils are very middle of the road, and the Sport coils everyone loves to put in is optimized for... surprise, SPORT, as in racing. Better @ 7000 RPM but not as good at idle.

Red's are not common over here for some reason. Rather expensive. Are there differences in where it is made as the rumored issue in the Blue between Brazil and Mexico?

Which Newtronic? Not familiar with that brand. Over here we have Pertronix ( no left-on protection in series I) and of course the old Luminitions. On the Autocar WEB, Newtronic is listed only for bikes.

I tried a Bosch red last week with my magnetic electronic ignition and it would not start at all, engine turned but there was no attempt to fire a single spark, back went the Intermotor and it fired up first time. Not sure if it was a dud but back it went to Amazon.
