adjusting the recorded mileage on the speedo

    Hi All

Can someone tell me how to go about adjusting the recorded mileage on the speedo?

Iam taking the dash complete with gauges out of one car and putting it in the other and I want the mileage to read correct for the recipiant vehicle.

    TIA

"adjusting the recorded mileage" - you mean clocking ?? . I know, I know, it's all totally above board and legal !!

Anyway, you'll find that the juducious application of a pointed object, (Eg pair of compasses or the like), in a rotational and slightly sideways direction from behind on the wheels with the numberswill usually yield the desired result - but don't tell anyone I said so !

However, IIRC you can only wind them forwards so you'll have to take it past the 99,999 and on to your desired figure. That's assuming you don't want a higher figure

So now we've got people asking how to clock a car online - and what's more, someone's telling them how to do it ! What about breaking into Stags and nicking the stereo, anyone got any ideas ? Martin.

If you are transferring the speedo over from your "old" car to the "new" car, why do you need to clock it, as the correct mileage will be on the transferred speedo, or am I just being thick?

is there a correct milage ? think i would start at zero an call it from 'resto milage. '

i would never buy a car like a stag and worry about what was on the clock. they are all innacurate in someway and many have had replaced or new dials at some point. is it not jusy a point of reference to gauge oil changes ect?

Take a chill pill.:P I am not clocking anything, I am simply transferring a gauge. If I was clocking it, I would leave it at the lower figure!

With regards to breaking into a Stag, simply use a stanley knife to cut open the soft top!

When I bought my Stag a few months ago the speedo was reading 00065 so I assumed it had been replaced / reset.

Only after studying all the recent MOTs did I realise that it was a genuine 100,065 miles.

However Ican (truthfully) tell my friends that I've bought a Stagwith virtually zero on the clock

I can see where your coming from on the new body, I would like the mileage to correspond with the M.O.T's for that car and not the one that your transferring it from, if anything different your only fooling yourself, I should think half the millage on some of these cars is incorrect anyway, that's why it is nice to see a stack of old M.O.T's when your purchasing a Stag, that said I have known of some members disconnect the speedo to keep the mileage low, what with the days of limited mileage on the insurance. I doubt that there are many that do over 3,000 miles a year unless your name is Denis Lol.

Someone tried to clock back the mileage before sellinghis car,... upon removing the speedo he found a little curled up note taped to it.......it read " OH NO NOT AGAIN".

                        Hi All

Just realised that I had forgotten to correct the mileage before I fitted the dash into the car. Doh:?

Anyway, the speedo is out of the car now and the front glass is off. How do I remove the mechanism? Is it case of simply undoing the two large screws on the back?

As I am about to add 20,000 miles to it at least I won't had to wind the wheels to far

                        Regards

when I did mine I removed the glass and using a jewellers screwdriver carefully moved each of the mileage barrels to the side whereby they could be spun around to the desired setting. IIRC

And don't forget the "oh no not again sticker"

Singapore Stag you didn't own an 89 8v GTI golf did you - might need to do a handwriting check with you if you don't mind :P
