    Zf geary box.

Evenin All, I'm thinking about having the 4 speed auto fitted. I have a Mk1 automatic which I'm quite happy with apart from the fuel (about 21mpg), however, I didn't expect to get good mpg when I bought it 1yr ago.
I've read nothing but good about the conversion, except I won't get the exhaust note I get now! It sounds quite good with the top down at 60mph (3500rpm)
I thought I might wait & see if the g/box was playing up, it would have helped with the decision, but it's fine at the mo(that's put the kybosh on it!).
So I thought I'd ask you learned people!
If there's anyone in the Raunds area who would take me for a test ride I'd appreciate that.
    What are your thoughts?
Is there a buyer who would buy a good used auto box & what do you think they are worth?
    Cheers

Well, when I bought my Stag I wasn’t ever going near an auto but it had a ZF and the bodywork was so good I decided that I could always change it for a manual. That was five years and 50,000 miles ago and I still have the 4-speed auto and 30mpg on a bad day. If the gearbox has been a Borg Warner I’d have tossed it in a trice!

Yes that is right 3500 rpm for 60mph . I always said that it needed another gear. I did my own zf conversion and it is a pleasure to drive now I have sorted out the niggles that I had. Now 3000rpm is way above the legal speed limit except on private roads.

          The BW35 should pull 3000rpm at 60mph, the same as a manual in 4th (no OD) - 19.8 mph/1000rpm, with 185/80 x 14 tyres.

          Like Seaking, I've done my own ZF conversion and, with a 3.45:1 diff, mine pulls 2000rpm at 60mph, 2250 at 70mph and 2500 at 80mph (185/80 x 14 tyres).

The engine note can be regained by using the 3rd gear setting using the gear lever - still shifts quicker than the BW boxes though. This option allows the 4th gear& lock-up at 50mph for motorway and more relaxed cruising.

I generaly use the 3rd gear about town and only put it into D when I'm off on a jaunt...

                My BW35 does 60 at 3000rpm?
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

Like David and Glenn I did my own ZF conversion, agree with everything said 2000 rpm at 60 plus smoother changes and the ZF seems not to suffer from the 'fluid incontinence' suffered by most BW boxes

                    My man/od, 3.45 diff and 195/70 tyres does 2350 rpm @ 100k. I wouldn't want it geared any higher.

I liked the BW 35. But after 2 rebuilds & noise issues with the oil pump which I couldn’t get a new replacement for, I decided to go with a zf.
it has been ok after leaks were sorted.
worth the cost. Transforms the car.
                      i was running a 3.45 diff, but currently have a 3.7 fitted .
whilst the zf with 3.45 really dropped the revs, the 3.7 is a good match for engine vs road speed.
                      195/70/14 fitted too.

the zf transforms the stag, 3000rpm at 80mph hardly even notice the changes unless you study the rev counter and kick down with my exhaust produces the roar I love

                          Thanks for all your input.
It's certainly helped to make up my mind.
