    Help !

The SOC Forum was my first foray into the world of Forums and it's been useful and fun. However can someone please help me to understand one thing? - What on earth is "Mana"?

In the hope that I could avoid asking, and making myself lookstupid, I thoughtI'd check it out in Wiki. So, what did I findt?:

"Mana and tapu are concepts which have both been attributed single - worded definitions by contemporary writers. As concepts, especially Maori concepts they can not easily be translated in to a single English definition . Both mana and tapu take on a whole range of related meanings depending on their association and the context in which they are being used":shock::shock:

Well, that means a lot, so I looked again and found"refers to a person or organization of people of great personal prestige and character"

Well, as I appear to have a couple of Green Mana blobs, that can't be it so I looked again and found: "......described mana as a natural resourcewhich is used or channeled by wizards to cast magic spells"Well, this is sounding a bit more like it - I think we all need a bit of wizadry andquite a few magic spellsif we'vegotStags

But can someone please put me out of my misery and explain what 'mana' is and how you get it - or whatever you do with/for it ???

      Hi Steve,

Ah ha - now I get it - and loved hearing the Muppets again !

Thank you for explaining and, now I understand it, thank you to all those who've given me some mana in the few months since I've been on here.

      Cheers

Even I agree that it does seem a bit odd and I'd prefer tohave as much knowledge as mana compared to the great green one.

Well, at leastwe do both have green cars

PS I have given mana to Kryten

No need to thank me - it's thoroughly deserved

Mind you, I've just thought what might be going wrong - maybe when anybody'smana is 'full' it starts again and you might be on the 20th time round - it's just that it 'fills up' so quickly that you've never noticed when it's full

              Besides, you're legendary now:dude:

Well Russ, you got me thinking about Mana and, the more you look into it, the more confusing it gets

If you select all members and then list them in mana order, there are just 19 members with 3 ½ 'blobs' and none with 4. Top of the blobs (because they are listed in alphabetical order) is a certain alan with his memorable avatar !!

Of the other regulars on the forum (measure by those who’ve made more than 100 posts) there is Dieter, Greenstag – who I still think should change his name to greystag now he’s changed his avatar – Gresley, Rogerc, Seaking and Westfaling

But the most incongruous of all the 'top' 3 1/2 blobbers is ‘city stag’ who has made a grand total of ONE post, back in December 2008 – maybe he’s getting all of Kryten’s mana by mistake

Now I understand what mana is supposed to be, can Graham, or anybody, explain how it works ?

                  [*] 3.2. What is Mana?
WowBB uses an advanced iterative algorithm to determine the most respected users. A user "adds mana" to other users she respects, and the more mana she has, the more the increase in recipients' manas. A user can also change her mind, and remove mana from someone to whom she added mana before. However, the more members a member adds mana to, the less the effect of those mana additions.

For example, let's assume that your mana is 3 out of 4. If you want to add mana to someone then you basically add him/her 3 points divided by the number of members to whom you added mana before. If you added mana to one member before, the amount of mana you would add is 3/(1+1)=1.5 points. This is a dynamic process. Whenever someone adds or removes mana, the manas of all members are calculated from scratch.

Finally, mana takes the normal distribution rule into account, and it gets increasingly accurate as you get more members.

One thing I do know is that you cannot give mana to an individual twice. So Russ you have to concentrate on helping people you have not helped before.

Ah ha - I think you've cracked it after all !! The secret was in the word 'she' - obviously none of us men can ever fathom it out then

I also loved the line: "A user can also change her mind" - as if ......

I would guess that the mana received by city stag has come from someone who has lot of mana themselves but not given much out.

A better system that I have seen on another forum just records positive and negative scores called Exalt and Smite. So you can see exactly how many awards have been given by other members.
