Saab had 4 or 5 stag engines and the am covers has Saab on them over the triumph imprint. The bolts/studs on the dolly engine was requested design by Saab so head could be removed without removing camshaft and because of this a special head gasket was designed to allow for odd expansion caused by different metals ally,steel and iron. This was carried over to the v8 and worked but after engineering handed over design to accountants they wouldn’t pay 50p for each ofthe special gaskets. So by saving £1 on stag engine it cost a lot of warranty claims. Of course that’s a different dept. I believe the Saab v8 ended up in Germany.
I heard the 15 degree studs was a service request by both sides, for head removal without cam removal.
afaiwa, the v8 design was done before the 4 cylinder.
the water pump is too high though, don’t know if it’s pinned to Saab only blame.
had lots of manifold fitment trouble tonight trying to use a new water pump cover from paddocks. Thought it was all fettled to fit having spent lots of time removing material, before doing the heads up and still had trouble fitting the inlet manifold afterwards.
the alignment is tricky even when not using a new badly made water pump cover, but that part was causing lots of extra fitting trouble....the original water pump cover was very corroded on the inlet spigot....but probably worth repairing in hindsight.
