    Rivet failure.

    Rivet failure at Monmouth today.
    by the way don’t go to Monmouth.....it’s messed up by the clowncil .....cycle path through the middle of the high street. Bikes not using it got shouted at to slow down....doing 12mph.
    i digress,
    all 4 rivets holding the gear selector failed & selector dropped onto propshaft.
    was able to disassemble & make it home in drive, but with much extra heat & noise coming through from the box / exhaust / road.
    all fixed now.
    anyone else had that happen?

          Who fitted your ZF because you have to take the selector apart when the ZF is fitted to rotate the selector shaft so that the lever is on the N/S to match the ZF rather than the original position which was on the O/S. This requires the rivets to be drilled out and replaced with new ones.

            Hi Alan.
            I think that the Tate and Lewis conversion uses a bracket to extend the linkage across.

                Aluminium pop-rivets joining two pieces of steel. I guess it’s not really surprising that they have given out after nearly 50 years. Although I’ve never heard of it happening - until now. Like you, Alan, I modified mine and replaced the rivets when I did the ZF conversion, so they are only 6 years old......

                  It has the Tate & Lewis bracket....fitted by myself & Russel Lewis.
                  The issue was only with the original rivets.
                  No apparent reason to replace them at the time it was converted.
                  Upon consideration, the length of the conversion bracket may add more torque to the rivets than was originally intended.
                  That could be a factor.
                  Will pass it on to the people who developed the kit.
                  Acknowledging the fact that the rivets were already probably past their intended best / life.
                  No detriment to the developers, just one of those things as far as I’m concerned.
                  Maybe 4 new pop rivets or small screws will feature in the conversion in the future?
                  After all its a really comprehensive kit... everything thought of & supplied, bar the atf!
                  Happy with the ZF kit here.
