    Auto box

I said in a early post that since fitting the weber carb I couldn't get the car to change gear properly .I have since played with the cable adjustment a lot and re routed the cable from the position I had it in and now it is better but still not right .I find that itwill notchange to 3rd under 2500 revs and then only if I take my foot off the pedal .so I assume that the problem is in the box end, what I need to know is how easy is it to adjust in the box the ROM tells you what to look for butdo notsay what to do if all is not as it should be

Sounds to me like the Kickdown cable needs more adjustment, (letting off) have you driven the car with it disconnected, that will prove if that's the problem.

What should happen if the cable is disconnected should it still change gear

          Hi there,

Itshould change gear as normal but won't take into account throttle position which normally would make it hold a gear longer when flooring it etc and affect the kickdown! (it probably won't work) but to prove this is the problem a quick drive round the block with it disconnected at the carb end should result in the normal stag early up change and a clunk free down change when stopping.

The cable should have a crimp on it to stop it going back too far, this is set in position when a G box is set up on rebuild, also no harm will be done driving it with it disconnected other than affecting its gear change characteristics.

          Hope this helps, Ian.

              How is the 1-2 shift?

If that is late as well, the governor could be sticking.

Disconnect kickdown cable first as suggested before.

If the upshifts are still late it may well be a sticking governor.

Governor can be removed & cleaned without taking the box out.

I disconnected the kick down cable today and took it for a drive .The car drove perfect and the gear change was smoother than its ever been in the three years I have owned the car .I guess this means that the cable is stretched and needs changing ,what sort of a job is it to change never done one before

                  Hi John,

That's good news. changing the cable is easy, there should be a plug you can take out on the passengers side of the transmission tunnel once the carpet is removed. the other thing you'll need to do is drain the oil and remove the sump, easy but messy. (careful with the banjo bolt if you have that type of filler tube)

Before you do that though, you could try carefully cutting off some of the outer cable which will give you more slack to play with and adjust it until your happy with the gear change and kickdown. I did this on and old Hillman Hunter I had. also a new cable will have the crimp but it won't be set as you need to put a pressure gauge on the box to set the pressure up.

Glad I was able to help, ps was you at Brooklands at the week end!

                  Ian.
