    Oil gauge fitting

    Afternoon chaps,
    I have a '75 Stag and would like to fit a oil pressure gauge but not sure which type to fit, Electrical or mechanical. Could any one instruct me please which is best and what do i need to do to fit one. ie: how to fit (electrical or mechanical ) and what size thread for the sender to the block and can i keep the original oil light on the dash, Do i need a t piece. ? Phew, so many questions.

    Electric ones are pretty inaccurate, and the large sender unit might be difficult to fit. Go for a capillary one and most Stag parts suppliers will include a correct fitting kit for the car, with a T piece so you can retain the pressure switch. Where the clock goes is the usual place to fit it straight in.

      If you want to keep your clock, you could go for a combined temp/and oil gauge and replace your current temp. gauge.I bought a kit from some non Stag supplier and regret it as I have to spend extra money on fittings. For Stag no. 1 has a mechanical oil gauge. I rarely look at it, but always keep an eye on the temp. gauge. For Stag no. 2 I bought a combines temp/oil gauge.
      The oil tubes which comes with the kit are some sort of plastic. I'm not sure how long they will last next to a hot engine.

        As you have a Mk2, you could see if you can obtain a late TR6 oil pressure gauge. They match the Mk2 Stag gauges.

          I replaced my water temp gauge with a combined oil pressure/water temp gauge. Fitted a t-piece for oil warning light signal

            If you are concerned about the plastic oil line being close to hot engine parts enclose that section in a flexible insulating tube.

              Or use the short steel braided section from an MGB its about 9 inches long, enough to get inside the cabin.

              Yup I have the TR6 one.

                Good point Ian. In my case I had a short braided pipe made and then joined it mid way to the plastic one.

                  I like the combined water temp/oil pressure gauge - lets your paranoia settle on one visual area!

                  Both are mechanical on mine:

                        I do use an oil pressure gauge for initial fire up after a rebuild.
                        after that they are often referred to as a worry gauge!
