Bumper re-chroming

I have made some enquiries from a local metal plating company on stripping and re-chroming the bumpers on the Stag.

They are quoting £230+vat for each bumper - not including the over-riders.

Does this seem reasonable?

Yes, but get a price for overriders being doneat the same time.

Have a close look at theirpreviouslyrechromedparts.

New stainless bumperkits are £800 from Wards.

Actually I had not considered changing to Stainless Steel.

Has anyone any experience on these - general wear and tear? Do they fade or are they stay bright stainless steel?

Having a rear done at the moment 275 plus return postage complete bumper including overiders and light plinth. Guy off e-bay had bits done before and very pleased with them. Some plating shops work is very thin and pits very quickly

Hiya Dave, I've seen the stainless bumbers on a couple of cars, and to say they look great is an understatement, all the fittings, brackets, bolts etc. are stainless as well. there are some pictures on here of Julians car, they would be well worth a look. Can anyone recall the title of his thread ? "bet draw or fold" or similar. Martin.

Thanks mate, that's the kiddy, Julian, or "big J" It's a very long thread, but if you go to the bottom third there are some very good pictures. Martin. PS overriders and plinths are stainlessas well.

Now the price of stainless steel bumpers is now more affordable rechroming is not an option. IMHO the only bumpers worth rechroming are good original ones.. the stainless ones do look nice.

If you do decide to go the re-chroming route, then check out 'Classics and chrome' they are based in the midlands and take work by post.

First class work and fair pricing -cant be bad.

is this the guy in Grays Essex - he is not to far from me and always has nice chrome bits on ebay

I had my bumpers rechromed ..Cost slightly less than stainless.The quality was less than satisfactory.I would definately go stainless next time round.

Yes same guy, just e-mailed me to say finished and look fantastic. In my opinion Chrome looks better than stainless. Stainless will dull and scratch easier than a good chrome finish.

If you use car daily in all weathers then stainless makes more sense but if you car spends most of its time in the garage during winter like most I suspect then a good chrome will last and does look 'right'
