Breaking into a fuel filler cap?

    Hi,

Okay, as you can see from my Avatar my Stag is a work in progress and at the moment only gets driven from my garage onto the drive when I want to work outside. As the fuel light has been on for some time, I thought it was time to put some fuel in. Now I find the problem is none of the keys appear to unlock the filler cap (first time I've needed to fuel it). :?

The barrel is designed for a key that is cut top and bottom, which from the keys I have is only the ignition key. This fits all the way into the lock but won't turn. (The other keys fit the boot and glove box). So for now I have added some fuel by removing the sender unit.

Anyway, I have now removed the filler cap, but still can't find a way to open it, even if it's to remove and change the lock. Can anybody help?

    Thanks, Jeremy

I have looked at mine and as far as I can see there is no way even with the filler cap off the car. I think you are going to have to drill the lock out :X

try putting some wd40 in the key hole then with the ignition key which should be the one try working it to turn, might just be jammed. failing that take the complete cap into a good locksmith and i am sure they will get it open for you, if you need fuel in the tank just remove the sender and pour it in from the top for now.

        Andy,

You're the man! Used the WD40 and all of a sudden it went from wanting to twist the key, to a lovely free turn of the lock. Just goes to show, try the simple solutions first!

        Thanks, Jeremy

          Folks,

Just remember that WD40 is a Water Dispersant not a lubricant. Once you've got the key to work in the lock use a light (30SAE if available) oil to keep it wotking.
