door speakers

hi there

i have two tahiti blue 1977 stags,and was intending to restore both however i am coming to the end of the first one,and think i'll leave it at that! my question is i want to put 4 speakers in, i have two in rear cubby panels and want to know where is the best place for the front ones,will they fit in the doors? regards simon n.yorks

imo i would fit them in a box under the front seat, if you want to fit them in the door buy a pair of panels with the holes cut out in them already

Hi Simon,

where the map pockets are on the door cards, there is a slight recess behind the cards which means you can fit shallow speakers in the door cards at this point. The map pockets are then rendered useless.

I am replacing my door cards because I did exactly what you are planning when I first had the car (some 25 years ago now) and I am going to try and find a way to fit speaker under the dash and in the existing speaker grill in the top of the dash. at over £100 each I won't be cutting the door cards again!

You cac put a small pair of speakers in place of the oval one on the dash, and this gives a reasonable stereo effect. My CD player adjusts the sound in favour of front or rear speakers, so you can get a decent balanced sound by playing with this setting.
The small speakers are a good fit in the dash aperture, and are readily available - nobody can tell any different, so all looks original. Previous threads on the subject are also worth a read.

you can fit a speaker into the the space left by the old speaker in the centre of the dash, also two small speakers can be fitted into the air vents either side (but they do have to be small). my door cards are cut because of the idiocy of the previous owner,one day i will get around to replacing these.

I've fitted a Retrosound dual voice coil speaker in the dash position & a pair of rear speakers in the cubbies - i think the combination of speakers gives good results.

Just another idea to give a good stereo sound

Ive got speakers in my doors , there is a recess for this but I didnt want to do away with the map holder pockets , I fitted the speakers to the door and then cut the door cards round the speakers but left the vynal trim intact on the door panels . Got speakers and door pockets sound is ok too.

doesnt cuting the door panels make the car more "period". Everyone I knew did it with the pioneer speakers from Argos or Halfords

oi mine had halfords pioneers in the holes

They and the pioneer stereo got stolen when mine was broken into at the train station. The car was alarmed with a halfords alarm...........They stole that too!

Always amused me at the time, just how do you sell a stolen car alarm down the pub?

Showing my ignorance again What are"dual voice coil "speakers. I like the sound of this ,as this is a jobI've been avoiding. Where do you get them from? I had thought of fitting rear speakers forward of the cubby hole somewhere under the chrome horse shoe.

Whatever you do don't let some butcher put regular size door speakers in in the front doors they will ruin your doors and cost a fortune to repair as the inner panel is double skinned at that point.
