    Carpet Fitting

    Hi,

Started to lay my new carpet from Aldridge.

I was surprised to see no glue was used on the original tunnel peice. I am a bit puzzled how to get the carpet to fit the contours of tunnel with out glue as it is only held on top with the seatbelt unit and off course under the centre console.

I am tempted to glue it around the sides to get the contours right on the tunnel but only at the rear end so I still have access to the reverse light access point.

    What have others done?

I was a bit dissapointed with the cut on the sill carpets they will definitely need some trimming to get a goodfit..

    Hello

~It all depends on the quality of the carpet. You want the mats to hold the tunnel down and in place. I have used trim-tack spray adhesive to hold some pieces, but it doesn't work too well if you have a lot of sound insulation under the carpet.

A small amount of cutting is normally needed to ease the fitting around contours. Assuming the under felt is already attached to the carpet then using carpet spray adhesive on the under felt is the best way to get a good fit IMHO

I used 3/4 can of adhesive when I fitted mine

Steve I asked a similar question on a previous post. I asked Aldridge what type of glue should be used, and the girl quoted me the following

Dunlop S1358 it is a high temperature glue, which they recomend, but as you said they will not send it.

She did however tell me that you can purchase it from a decent motor factors, or a carpet /flooring shop. She also warned against using Evo stick, as this is not the best apparently

This may be some use to you, s I have been advised against using ****e glue, have not started mine yet

          Thanks for the advice.

Yes, I was also advised on good quality adhesive as evostick has quite a low melting point and will melt in a car under glass.

So for my seats and this carpet job I purchased some contact adhesive from a local auto trimmer firm and this seams to do the trick.

OK so a bit of trimming required. Adridge are quite generous with there quantities so lets have a go this afternoon.

Steve to be honest it's always better to have to much then not enough, if you no what I mean. Good luck wih carpet fitting. I have,nt started mine yet although the carpets have been here since Xmas. Have had a host of other things to see to, and SWMBO get's p***ed off if I spend days working away on the old lady. In fact I can hear her organising something for this afternoon on the phone as I write this, ughhhhhh, I hate visiting people LOL!!

Let me know how you get on. What make of glue did you buy??

              I know how you feel.

I found new seat covers, foams and carpets just before Christmas.
I have one seat nearly finished, one to do and I just got the carpets
              finished this afternoon.

Was actually quite easy to fit the carpets the only difficult bit was around
the sills. Not so happy with one side as it is difficult to get it without creases.
The other problem is that the wiring looms run directly under the carpets held in place with sticky tape so you have to be careful where you glue the carpets else they look bumpy.

Still they look better that the originals that were in.

The glue is called Dekalin UN1133 Extra strength. This stuff is used on boats and car interiors
over here in Switzerland I bought it from a local firm that does recovering of seats
              etc for cars and boats.

Good luck when you start yours
