Yuasa every time. My range Rover battery went a few months ago, the AA came out. The only batteries that they stock on their vehicles are Yuasa. Working in a sort of garage environment majority of the people swear by these batteries. There just as good as a Bosch but a lot cheaper, and you normally get a five year guarantee.
I was so impressed with the battery on the Range Rover that I went and got one for my Stag. Both cars were left just over eight weeks and surprisingly both started that without any issues.

I need to replace my battery, as it got trashed by being ignored for too long. I will get whatever my local garage stocks, but would like to get the new one before removing the old one (so I can do the swap over without leaving the power pump dangling too long). Mine has the positive terminal nearest to the wing and towards the rear of the car, and I have picked up that some owners readjust the layout of the wiring. So, is mine standard, or do I have to tell the garage I need a none-standard Stag battery?

The car also doesn't have a retaining strap for the battery, so any recommendations on whether I need one and where to get it? (though I suspect the mounting points for the strap are probably shot, which would explain why it doesn't have one).

      Thanks

Should you wish to MOT your Stag you might find that the lack of a securing bar or strap on the battery is an issue.

That is the same as mine. As standard, I think the terminals are the other way around, so when selecting a battery by vehicle type Stag it will point you to a battery different to your current layout. I believe some people change so the positive terminal is away from the power steering pump. I ordered a new battery from Amazon a couple of days ago, which arrived today. It is a Varta E23 70Ah 630A which has the positive terminal 'nearest to the wing'. I hope to fit it tomorrow.

I'd spend the extra on a AGM battery.
They keep the charge much better for casual use as my Stag is.

I went for a Yuasa YBX 1075 (the old one was a 1065 which has now been superseded). I think the 1075 is also being superseded, as I got it from 'parts2clear' for less than Yuasa advertise it for (I did wonder about that, but the vendor has a score of over 100,000 on ebay, so I don't expect a duff battery). Expect it Friday.

The Stag is of course now MOT exempt, but I do have the neighbourhood MOT testing station take a look at it from time to time - they don't charge me anything and just give me a list of things to attend to. The car was missing the battery clamp when I bought it a few years ago, and then it had needed an MOT and had just been given one. It also had a split fuel hose in the boot . . . need I say more?

Anyway I have a clamp on order from EJ Ward, and I'll get some kurust and battery tray paint from Halfords, so when I open it up I can do a proper job of tidying things up whilst they're exposed.

Hi, another vote for one of the reconditioning chargers. I have a CTEK which I have used on various batteries on cars, tractors, lawn mowers and in particular caravan batteries which are all a pain if left for months at a time but readily revived with a decent charger.

Interesting discussion. I bought a new battery immediately after I bought my Stag and took what the local garage in Rock had available from stock. It lasted just under 5 years. Whenever the car is used for less than 2 weeks or more, I now connect a Lidl battery charger/conditioner to it. When it reaches full charge, I switch it to maintenance charge only. I paid the price of not doing so the previous winter despite disconnecting the battery.

i have now installed a “Shield stop/start” battery which I am told can take heavy discharges before being damaged. £120 so not cheap. If I could have found a marine deep discharge battery to fit I would have gone for that.

I believe the key is to make sure batteries do not run flat as this risks damaging the plates. I have just put the battery on charge as the weather forecast for the next 10 days does not look brilliant.

Bosch S5 on all my toy cars.
                    Last over 5 years easily.
Don't bother with a maintenance charger on the Stag, as basically nothing taking any current.
My Maserati however would be dead after a month without.

It is not so much about drain currents, as about sulphation, which a good maintenance charger like a CTek will stop.
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

                          Hello,
The question is, whether your alternator is strong enough to load an AGM battery? When you buy a battery, you must be aware of the fact that the plus and the minus pole are different to other (normal) batteries. So some companies offer "Asia" models with the plus pole on the lhs. I bought a Dynalite Asia 560 413, which offers an additional advantage: It comes without a pedestal. So it is easier to build in.
                          Best wishes,
                          Dieter - from Germany.

                            Hi Dieter,
The poles are the same as the original battery. So it fits perfectly where the battery was meant to. So far there do not appear to be problems charging the battery by the alternator. And thankfully it can be left without any noticeable loss of voltage for a good 2 weeks.
I did have a new alternator and upgraded starter motor when the engine was rebuilt.

original alternator and normal stock battery are fine for the stag - keep it original, however i wouls always choose a japanese battery over european
