    No Fuel Getting to pump

Hi all, happily driving along last week and the old girl stalled. No petrol getting to the pump so a nice man from the club insurance breakdown scheme (which was excellent incidentally) brought me home. Pulled the pipe from the rear filter as per the manual and switched on the ignition but no fuel. Checked connections and 12v getting to pump fine. Bought a new fuel pump from LD parts and fitted. Same again (except pump clicked away nicely) but no fuel still. Wondering if this might be a blockage or breather problem? Any advice greatly appreciated as its driving me mad! Thanks in advance.

Pipe from tank to pump collapsed/blocked?

If you blow into that pipe, can you hear air bubbling in the tank?

There IS fuel in the tank ? (had to ask, lol)
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

Hi Wilf, yes, plenty of fuel (dont mind you asking as I'm a real novice!) but not tried blowing through the pipe which I'll do tonight. I can see that one end from the filter goes to the top of the tank but the other side disappears under the tank. Should you be able to blow through both? Thanks

Are you sure you're looking at the correct filter and not the one in the boot which is used as a flame trap in the breather? The fuel filter is the one under the bonnet attached to the LHS suspension turret.

Hi mallardstag. I feel a bit stupid now it is indeed the rear filter that I've been looking at! I'll have a look at the main fuel filter at the front and see if I can see if its blocked. I guess it wouldnt hurt to fit a new one whilst I'm at it. Fingers crossed. Is it best to prime the new pump with fuel first as its dry? - Thanks

When the pump clicked did it stop? If it did that could infer a blocked filter or line from the pump to the engine. If it clicked continually then it’s maybe not picking up fuel so that infers a problem in the tank to pump line, either a blockage or a leak (which would cause it to suck air rather than fuel)

When I suspect fuel issues, pull the pipe off before it enters the filter within the engine bay. On my mk1 the fuel line is a stiff plastic, Only the rubber connections can collapse. There's 2 one leaves the fuel tank and other enters the fuel filter.

                  Neil.
I think it is unlikely that the blockage is at the tank end, unless there is something floating about in there. The sender unit would need to be lifted out to look for that..
There have been some in line fuel filters around that collapse inside and block the fuel, so replacing that would be a simple / inexpensive test.
Here is something else you could try. Bridge out the fuel pump inertia cut out switch next to the fuse box and see if that gets the fuel flowing. There may well be 12 volts at the pump, but maybe not enough amps.
The contacts inside them corrode a bit with age, and don't pass enough current for the pump to work correctly. If that works, then the switch can be easily dismantled and cleaned inside.
                  Mike.

If the recovery man was basing his diagnosis on looking at the wrong fuel filter then your problem may well be nothing to do with the pump or filter.

Just a quick update - Put a new petrol filter on and cleaned up the inertia switch which was pretty rusty inside! Not sure which was the problem but now runs fine. Thanks for your suggestions all, really helpful and did the job
