Replacement wiring loom ........ Good idea or not??

    Hi all,
A bit more time on my hands now - unsurprisingly i guess. The Stag strip-out continues, so, as the title suggests I'm considering the option of replacing the near 50 year old wiring loom as odd sections are u/s or have been previously gashed. Anyone already gone down this route - albeit with positive or negative views? (no pun intended ) Any experiences of fitting a new loom from any of the common suppliers would be of great interest/help to me, so any thoughts as ever would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Gord

Not done this, but if were undergoing a full strip-out, I would go for a new loom from Autosparks https://www.autosparks.co.uk/ .
White 1976 build ("Mk2") only a few mods

I used a set of Autosparks harnesses on the Alvis, they were top-notch. Haven’t tried a Stag harness though… I’d be interested to see how the connectors matched the originals.

Ive been buying plug and sockets from Autosparks there meant to be the same as original,i bought the 4 pin version but found the pins didnt lock in position, holding the female part of the pin

Which Alvis have you got Richard? I have a wiring loom for my Grey Lady, but the look of all that spaghetti terrifies me!

I bought a full set from Autosparks and Kevin at Faversham fitted it this July when my car was ready for reassembly. Some good points (they finally now included the connector for the warning light cluster) but some bad (wrong connectors for side running lights). Overall excellent quality. I was not about to put back in a 46 year old set of wires that had been chopped and changed and covered in grease and crap!

Make your own. I did both the Stag and GT6 during their respective restos.

                Hi Gord,
I purchased my wiring loom from Autosparks, along with all the auxiliary harnesses, loom tape, bullets, earth strap etc and fitted everything myself.
I visited them in Nottingham to ensure I had the correct layout for my 1972 Mk1 Stag and went through their assembly schematics to ensure everything matched.
I had some extra wires included in the main loom for
                Electric fan override switch
                Coolant/water level indicator
                Fuel cut-off activation lamp
My advice would be to ensure you purchase a good quality bullet crimping tool and a mixture of bullet sizes (or connectors/pins for MkII).
Then spend some time to consider what optional wiring extras you might need.
With experience, I would now also consider extra wiring for:-
Alternator wiring top-left instead of bottom-right
                Front Fog lamps
                Head lamp relays
                Alarm/immobiliser
                Hazard flasher relay
                Starter relay
Autosparks can include this extra wiring when they build and wrap the main loom for a small extra cost.
                I hope that helps.
                Den

Thanks for all the responses folks. I wont make up my own loom Rubce that route's not for me, though fair play to you as you clearly managed it. The general consensus appears to be Autosparks doing a decent job (my preferred option initially TBH) albeit with a few issues to consider. Any knowledge in advance is always a Godsend though, forewarned is forearmed and all that.
Special thanks to DZP Den for your sharing your experience and pointers - really useful info.
Thanks again for taking the time to respond folks I really appreciate it
                  Cheers
