Indicators seem to be flashing slowly

Gent's I'm pretty sure that my indictors flash pretty slowly. Is this normal or should they flash pretty quickly. Not at sure how I could check if they are flashing at the correct speed, any ideas. And if they are to slow how do you go about changing the flasher unit?

Mine were like that - left worse than right - until I fitted the electronic flasher unit from Peter at LD parts.

Doddle to fit, just needs an extra earth and now flashers are perfect. Fast as they should be, steady and both the same.

And it was only a fiver or so

Hi Mike, I believe the MOT test specifies it must be between 60 and 120 times a minute, so between once and twice a second. if yours is towards or worse than once a second then it could be, the flasher unit is past its best, too much resistance build up in corroded electrical connections.

The flasher unit on MK2 cars is in the steering column wiring (on mine anyway) and I believe on Mk1 cars its on the main relay board in the passenger footwell (behind the parcel shelf), I could be wrong though.

There is a mod to change the flasher unit to an electronic one that's less susceptible to resistance type problems which should come up in a simple search on here.

        Hope that helps
        Ian

From LD Parts site (no financial connection) - just a very satisfied customer

          £5.58 inc VAT

An electronic flasher unit which can be used to replace the original bi-metallic strip type, and gives a regularly timed flash which doesn`t slow down when you do, or when your lights are on.
It requires its own earth from the terminal marked 31. The Green Brown wire goes to the Terminal marked 49A, the middle terminal and the Green Slate or Green Orange to the terminal marked 49.

Thanks guys will look into changing the flasher unit. Can this be accessed when you remove the dash facia with the speedo rev counter etc etc. Or do I have to remove the plastic covers from the steering column??

Mine was hanging on two wires above the steering column, you can access it without taking dash panel out.

                  Hi Mike,

I fitted one of the SFB190 units recently. Should have done it years ago. Indicators now operate immediately, with no delay, no matter what other load is on the system such as lights, HRW, fan, radio, etc.

Original flasher was above the steering column, with enough wire to locate the new unit behind the tacho. Attach the earth to the same place as the one from the speedo.

Mine was fitted just under the dash to the left of the steering column, no need to remove the dash as it was just clipped in place and easy to remove. Fitted an electronic flasher unit from Halfords which just needed an additional earth wire to allow it to operate and bingo, indicators that operate like the ones on a modern car and that operate at the same frequency irrespective of the engine speed or load on the alternator. A cheap and worthwhile modification.

                        Hi,

                        Try this thread

There is a picture of the one I fitted that ended all my problems of slow flashers. Got mine from Halfords. Unit was in the sterring column and very easy to fit - just need an extra earth wire.

                        cheers

Gent's the one that'son my carat the moment is a small cylindrical one, like a mini coke can. When you mention an earth wire do you just connect this directly onto something that is connected to the entire car body. I have just bolted an earth wire from the speedo to the body of the car, so recon I could also attache the flasher unit earth as well.

Yep - small cylindrical ones were, IIRC, on earlier cars and any connection to earth will do - I just made a 3" leadwith a spade connector at one end - onto the terminal number 31 - and an eyelet connector at the other end through which I fitted the fixing screw for the newflasher unitinto the metal of the dash. Your speedo one would do just as well.

If you have a Mk2 with the hazard light plunger on the dash you will find that the feed for the flasher unit comes from the back of the plunger.

Mine was furred up with 30+ years of crud. A jet of electrical switch clearer stuff and a good wiggle around restored mine so much that it blew the new lucarse flasher that I had just installed. It then blew the replacement so I went back to the original tin can and all is well again.
