Anybody got any experience with Tiger seal in comparison with standard fixing clips, and are the strips scrap if you need to remove them with Tiger seal?
The bond is structural Bob. It’s a super product. Maybe a bit of a risk for removing. Haven’t used it fo chrome yet for that reason. Maybe someone else has.
Body shops resort to sikaflex in the event of being short of clips.
slightly less structural.
imagine any clean up could scratch chrome.
After a rather nice respray my strips were bonded on. However getting the strips to lay down perfectly against the bodywork was not easy particularly at the ends of the strips. Eventually clips needed to be used at the ends, as a clip provides both centralisation and hold down function to the strip. I would rather have fully bonded but it was not to be.
The bond does seem a one time fixing and if the strips need to be removed without destroying the paintwork I would use clip.
I did mine with Tiger Seal with no real problems. They won't be coming off in my lifetime. I had the original trims re-chromed. It's a bit fiddly securing the trim with duct tape but as far as I am concerned it is better that than damage to the paint with clips. Before my restoration my boot lid and rear panel were corroded where every clip was fixed. I also had the body shop trial fit every horseshoe before painting. Make sure you clean off any excess before it sets. See pics
Like Alan I needed a couple of clips at the ends to stabilise the top strips front and back, the horseshoes did not need any. All had a good quality duct tape holding them as they set. I used a good grade silicon as I did not want that permanent seal and it was easier to remove the excess from my nice new paint! They took a few days to set,
So far so good
I used Tigerseal during our Stag resto in 2010 and again during our GT6 resto in 2013. After I resprayed the Stag in 2018 I again used Tigerseal. All the Stag trim was re-used after the 2018 respray. Make sure you have all the trim firmly taped into place whist the Tigerseal sets and remove any excess immediately after application. Don't get it on your skin as its a git to remove! Only apply an appropriate amount of sealant at the same spacing as the original clips. Don't be tempted to apply all the way along as you will create a water trap.
I don't understand why anyone would sue the original style barbed clips on a fresh paint job as they are designed to dig into the paint!
Thanks for your replies, as I thought it might destroy the strips. As good quality parts are getting harder to get, I think I will start with the clips.
With regards to using clips, many decades ago (the 80's) there was little option BUT to use them. I was working on a tight budget back then after a full respray so decided to refit all the bright stuff myself and was advised by the bodyshop to apply small cuts of 3M adhesive ally foil tape on the panel joint before pushing home the clips to reduce damage to the fresh paintwork. It did make the fit a little tight and like many here had difficulty getting the ends to sit flush.
I used silicone to stick the boot trim,i run the silicone the whole length of the trim, later we changed the boot for one that fitted better, but couldnt get the original trim off the boot, may be find some thing that dosent stick as well
