    Indicator Stalk

Hi guys, trust we are all keeping safe and well.

A recent trip in Cyd highlighted a growing problem with the indicator stalk, it's quite stiff and at one worrying moment didn't want to move down at all. I've searched the site but can only find reference to replacing the unit. Before I go looking closer I thought I'd tap into the collective wisdom of the club membership. Is this a serviceable problem or is it likely to be a replacement job? I notice from its history that it has been fitted with a replacement before. Is this a weakness?

    Thanks in advance,
    Brian

It is indeed serviceable... but beware. Ball bearings can fly about. The mechanism does come apart easy enough and then the metal switch plates can be cleaned etc. The problem is that the plastic becomes brittle and snaps. Its worth a go, but new ones are not that expensive.

My windscreen stalk also had issues in that it would not park and the single wipe did not work, I did take mine apart only to find that it had been bodged already and so I had to replace it

    Good luck

    Dave

Cheers Dave, that is the sort of experience that is invaluable.

      Kind regards,
      Brian

there are no ball bearings on the indicator stalk, only on the wiper stalk, the most common problem is that either the centre pivot is dry or there is a catch behind a little metal clip on the side of the switch, there is a strong spring behind the the metal clip which operates a little plastic "tooth" that holds the indicator stalk in position until cancelled by the self cancelling mechanism on the column. Dont try to remove the clip, it will almost certainly break the plastic its fitted to. Try some silicone spray lubricant on that and the centre shaft, you wil see underneath the switch that its riveted over with a lead attached to it. the shaft cannot be removed without destroying the switch! good luck, derek

          Thanks Derek,
The car's away at the moment as I'm having some garage work done, but as soon as she's back I'll go exploring.
