I have been keeping an eye on a seemingly abandoned Stag for some years, I recently tracked down the owner. It has a detailed history and was on the road up until 8 years ago when it was overheated and one head blew, Then left sadly. Its been parked up uncovered on concrete ot has deteriorated pretty badly, I believe the engine is seized and there is some rot as one woud expect in the bottom corner of the wheel arches, the floors are just about in tact. It has a hardtop, its a manual with overdrive L reg. The history shows that quite lot of work had been done up until park up, bushes, exhaust bit of welding brakes and so on, its just on the cusp of restorability it seems to me, another year or two and it would be a basket case. The big question is what is it worth? I have restored Triumphs in the past as I grew up over the road from the plant in Coventry, I have rebuilt a GT6 a Spitfre various Triiumph motorbikes back in the 70's, So I have a good idea of what is involved and the costs today. I would like to get it up to rolling restoration standard and Im prepared to put up to £10k in to it, What does the forum think? Regards Paul

Can you weld? The bodywork is where the costs may lie heavy. You could easily do £10k on bodywork-a half decent respray is £3k. You could do, £4K on the engine (the bits are £2k assuming the head isn’t warped) and then all the other bits (seats, hood etc). You’ll end up spending more than you think and may find you hate the car for it.
OK maybe that’s a bit dramatic and In no way do I want to dim your enthusiasm but unless that car is free or means something sentimental to you I would put your £10-12k into the best car you can find (you’ll get a decent one at that level although you still need to buy well) and have a less stressful ownership experience. If you can stretch to £15 the world is your lobster Rodney.
I and many on here will be happy to help you find a car if you want help
cheers

If the car has bee outside for eight years it will pretty much cost you £10k to get it back on the road. If you want a nice-looking car with decent paint and a reliable engine, you'll need a lot more money that that. If you want a project, and the owner gives you the car near enough for free, then go for it.

Thanks for the welcome and the advice. I let the guy know today that I won't be taking it, he offered it to me for 1250. It's hard to see what was once a beautiful car slowly falling apart but I can't afford to be sentimental
So I am after a project stag having first seen the development car parked at the back of the factory when I was 12, even my uncle who worked on the track was intrigued when i got him over to have a look through the fence opposite my house on tile hill lane.
Ever since that moment i have wanted a stag but have been waiting 50 years until i actually have the resources to get one. I want one i can do some work on and improve to get my wayward son interested. We did up a triumph herald 10 years ago and he made a bit if money but amazed what now passes for a 'classic' and what they fetch.
Most of the cars I had I the 70s I would never want to own again especially not at today's values. But a Stag is different, I have history with them having seen so many triumphs come in and out if the factory when I was growing up.
I have got the Norton Commando I wanted when I was 17, the Stag would complete the collection

Good decision Paul. Depending on where you are, I'm sure we can help find something. This one on the club for sale page seems worth a call https://www.stag.org.uk/product/1974...a-yellow-stag/Paul - 3 projects, 1 breaker - garage built and housing 2 white Stags. One runs, one doesn't

Thanks Goldstar, I spoke the the guy who owns this one last week and was hoping to go and see it as its only 30 mins from me, sadly my wife isn't keen on yellow ( i know I know) Its period I agree having had a mk3 2 litre GT Cortina in yellow when I was 18 however I wasn't with her then lol! I think it sold to the first to see as it looked like a bargain - Paul

Hi all , there are a couple of automatic Stags that I may be interested in, both have the origanal BW gearbox, one has lost all gears and the other wont go in to top. In my limited experience auto boxes can be problematic if hydraulic fluid runs low ( perhaps not going in to top) filters have not been cleaned and oil refreshed ( not going in to top) I have never experienced loss of all drive which sounds pretty catastrophic and means either a new box or a rebuikld. I understand that there are improved more modern auto boxes available so my question is is it worth getting a stag with a blown box at a suppressed price and making the modern conversion? I am imagining it costing around £2k to make the change?
There is also one I am interested in but it has ne history prior to 2016 with no explanation as to why.
The hunt continues
