pre purchase assessment in somerset- help please!

Hello, I am a new SOC member, actively looking to buy my first Stag. I sought psychiatric help first, but I am beyond help, the only treatment will be owning one!

With the help of the Somerset area co-ordinator, I have found a possible car. It belongs to an ex member, who has done lots of work on it. He seems a really genuine bloke and I do not doubt anything he has told me. However, it is a lot of money and as I know nothing at all, about anything really, but cars in particular, I would value a neutral opinion.

The car is near Bridgwater in Somerset and the owner is happy for someone to come and assess it with me.

Any help would be gratefully received!

I suggest you contact the area co-ordinator for Wales and the South West. His name is Garry Martin and he lives in Yeovil. (01935 427625) You will find him on page 88 of the November issue. He may be able to suggest someone to guide you through the minefield of buying a decent Stag.!

Have you driven a Stag, or any classic car? I say this because, before parting with £xxxs you should really be sure that you are ok with driving a 50 ish year old car. They look great, do classic cars, but plenty of people who then drive them don't enjoy the differences when compared to a sophisticated modern car. Not trying to put you off, just make sure you drive at least one before buying!

if you are of as they say a certain age driving a stag will be a joy after modern cars. but although being sold by a club member get another opinion, if the seller is happy to list all that has been done for you this would be some way to reassuring you its a worthwhile purchase as you would have some comeback if something were to fail in a short time after the purchase.
but at the end of the day you pay your money and take your choice.
welcome to the stag mad House called ownership

No matter how much you like the Triumph stag you’re looking at. Don’t spend all your money on it. As you will need some because you can guarantee it will go wrong fairly soon in your ownership. If you haven’t got the money leftover in reserve then you feel sick as a pig, you'll thought think you have bought a lemon and be totally disgruntled with owning a classic car.

You’ve got to understand that it is nearly 50 years old no matter how much someone is cared for the vehicle, components with age will fail.

thanks all, yep, I have driven, but not owned, a few knackered old heaps over the years, I fully appreciate what I am getting into!
Garry put me on to this car, he is acquainted with the owner so, understandably, doesn't want to do it. I think he's asked around and has not been able to find anyone, hence the appeal to a wider audience.
this car is right at the top of my budget and as Bullstarz mentions, I was hoping to keep a reserve back for the inevitable crisis.
the other option is to find a local Stag friendly mechanic who can give it once over. I know Rivington TR are fairly near, but does anyone know of any other likely candidates in the Bridgwater area?

Definitely get it checked out by someone who is knows what they're talking about even if you have to pay them for their time.
There are plenty of lemons out there as are there duff cars too.

I'm in Bristol, I'd be happy for a day out to Bridgwater.... and I used to own a Triumph classic car restoration business. My Stag needs a run out and it's only a hour from here...

I’m about an hour away as well, so we could give it the twice over. Socially distanced of course......

I bought my Stag on 1st April 5 years ago. And I have spent a lot on it. I am no longer able to do much work myself, so have had to pay a specialist. It’s a sort of masochist madness! But my wife prefers the Stag to the Alvis which by comparison is easier to fix.
